What's in your vise?

"Can you please share the materials for your ant patterns? Very interesting looking flies./Pat"

little plastic beads covered with UV resin, crystal flash for the legs
pretty easy really, even for someone with Tootsise Rolls for fingers like me.

Oh you just opened up a can of ingenuity worms.

I can see my thread bump egg patterns becoming a whole lot easier to tie.

WATCH OUT WHITEFISH EGG EATERS!!! 😁

I'm struck by how similar these patterns are--at their core anyway--but intended for rather different fisheries. In the end, I guess trout are trout, and flies are flies.

^Feel free to begin or end your evocative novella with this line.

Great ties all around.
Beneath the mirrored skies
We cast our fragile lies
For trout are trout
And flies are flies

Didn't get the 4 separate wing segments perfect but it'll fish. 3 more to go for that one and then 4 each of 4 more patterns for a buddy this morning. My desk is going to be a disaster with 3 out of the 5 having Marabou wings

Funny you mention it. I remember have a very similar question when I tied mine up many years ago. Anyway, I was just thinking about this pattern again this fall--contemplating how to convert it into a more intruder-style.

Quick stripping swinger for winter steelhead for whenever certain waters drop enough. I've been fishing this for the last several years with good success with both swinging and stripping. There's a 4mm bead buried in there to help it get to the perfect depth.

In case you're wondering why I don't go with trailer hook instead, it's basically like this: a trailer hook for stripping sucks far more than a standard hook for swinging.
