Annual favorite fish of the year thread.

Perfectly "not cooked" is my preference ;)

Do you freeze the sable fish before using it for sashimi? Wondering about parasites. In doing some research some say it is not safe even after freezing and yet it is a sushi staple in Japan. I've never had it raw but I imagine it would have the same smooth texture as hamachi.

Mind giving up your recipe for smoking the sablefish?

Not the prettiest catch last year, but definitely the least expected. Trout fishing in Montana, and my friend/guide said one section of the river had pike and we should bring an 8-weight. Sure enough! Also caught a bunch of beautiful trout. Fantastic week with friends and lots of fish.

I didn't catch a lot this year, a few on the yak and a few in MT. I think I've even been skunked on anadromous fish this year (so far).

But I had a good week in Winthrop thanks to some guidance and intel from one of our still water masters @Starman77 . I was able to get a few on Rex's water boatman pattern and enjoyed chatting with him via PM here on the site. Thanks again Rex!

I was in Mexico last month with my brother. We fished Mag Bay for two days and caught eight different species; mostly new ones to me. Another day we went out from Loreto and I got a bucket list Dorado. Not the biggest Dorado, and not a great pic. My brother's amigo Pepe was convinced that no one ever caught fish on fly gear, and was most impressed that I went one for three.

Oh, did I mention that I got it on a Muddler?

I should post up a TR one of these days.

These were a couple fish from what will always be one of the most memorable times of my life…me and my boy living out of our backpacks for a week and fishing one of the most beautiful areas on the planet. It’s one of those memories where, when you think back to it, almost doesn’t seem real. DSC_2511.jpegIMG_9483.jpegIMG_9491.jpegDODD1687.jpeg

Probably this one. Mainly because I was fishing for searun cutts, so it was a surprise and fought better than any coho I’ve caught in recent years. Beach coho fishing sucked this year so it was a fun fish to close the season out with.

Herself in July, breaking off a nice canyon fish. I did the same thing, same place in the fall after she’d gone east for school. Also remembering the fish we didn’t even cast to, up on the refuge in an aspen grove that burned hot last year.

I have two.

We heard rumors of a nearby lake with chunky brook trout a so went exploring. We didn't catch many, but we found a few:

We hiked into an alpine lake that tends to have decent size cutthroat and had a pretty good day catching 14"-15" fish, then I encountered this 18" surprise:

Try pickling black cod.
I'm one for trying just about anything, but I've yet to have pickled fish that I've enjoyed even a little bit. Strange too because I love pickled and/or fermented vegetables. Can't get into it with fish for some weird reason.
