Awesome Dogs of PNW

Wife and my kids/grandkids are gone so I'm dog sitting. The one on left is for water birds and I almost took him fishing yesterday. Just worried about all the burrs and cleaning up a wet dog. Kinda jealous how Zak and Rigby are making out, just not sure I'm ready to care for another living thing yet. The other one dislikes the water but is great for upland work. They both could use to get out a bit more.1000003988.jpg

Rescued dog Rigby is great and I love him. But he's still not trustworthy off leash. He picks fights with other dogs and only comes when called most of the time. It makes fishing with him less carefree than fishing alone. He's great in the boat, though!

Yeah, kinda tough to take him in your MG 😉.

My SUV has a dog barrier behind the back seat, and there's a washable rollup kennel pad on a Weather Tech cargo mat with an integrated rollup bumper protector that helps contain the mess.

I've had two (of seven) dogs since the 1980s that were great fishing companions. My current dog Cali behaves well; comes when called 98%, loves people and (most) other dogs, but 22" at the shoulders seems a bit small to follow me when wading in most of my fishiest places. I haven't tried her on my WM yet but like most of my other dogs, curls up to sleep in the car on the kennel pad and think she might do OK.

Rigby is great with humans- adults, kids, and babies. Other dogs though, not so much. I think he was a street dog that had to fight for his dinner or something. We are working on it and he's improving slowly, but I don't think he'll ever go to the off leash dog park again.

Here’s one I’d like some help with, just for fun. After 2 years without a dog we decided it’s time, I quit hunting years ago and last 30 years dogs have been rescued. This one at local shelter stole our hearts the minute we saw her; unlike a lot of shelter dogs she was neither hyperactive nor shy and retiring. We will be bringing her home this weekend after she’s spayed. Would like to know what she is, besides Mutt. Rescue trainer says standard poodle and Aussie, I see a lot of wire haired pointer dna, AI is all over the place, from Airedale to Irish Wolfhound to Short Haired Pointer (?). She 22” at the shoulders and about 5 months old. Meet Gracie:

We did a DNA test on her, results were interesting; she is 49% AussiePoo, the 51% is where it is interesting:
37% Alaska Malamute
14% Husky
25% Poodle
24% Australian Sheperd

So just got back from the evening walk in the park. Some guy had a beautiful golden retriever on a leash l, standing off the path. I kept Rigby on a short leash and as we got near, that other dog went ballistic! Barking madly, he dragged his human to us and attacked Rigby!

I lashed out with my foot and caught that dog under the chin with the toe of my boot, while swearing a blue streak, very loudly, at its owner. My kick backed the dog up and the guy dragged it away while apologizing.

Rigby isn't hurt.

Jeez'um crow! That was not an awesome dog!

The other morning we were weeding out front and a gal walking 3 dogs lost control of one and it caught up with Emma and knocked her down before she could run inside. I could tell the owner was upset but I also got the impression it's not the first time she's lost control of her animals. Emmers just now getting comfortable out front again. She's great, won't go on the sidewalk.

Not sure the dog was the one who needed a kick.

My fishing buddy is starting to have seizures....enough of them that the vet wants to put her on an antiseizure med like phenobarbitol or keppra for the rest of her life.

Surely someone out there has had to deal with this...or still is. So, do you have any advice?
- Like go with the keppra....
- and/or start the meds sooner rather than later....or wait a while.....or don't do them at all.
- How expensive is it and where to find the cheapest source?
- Anything else that might be helpful...

FWIW....She's gonna be 8 this summer and, aside from this, is in good overall health. She had her first seizure 3 years ago and then nothing until this past August. She's been having one per month since then. The one last night went for about 7 minutes.

We had a Cocker Spaniel with seizures. 12 1/2 years, pretty much daily. We did phenobarbital? thing with the vet, and I think got meds from roadrunner? out of Arizona. They scare ya pretty good, but once she came out of it she seemed fine. Spent a lot hours cuddling her, but we got a lotta years of love. After my wife went to take care of her Mom one summer, we'll she was mine for the rest of her life, my yard shadow. It's expensive, and the darn haircuts. It was worth it for all of us I think.

My big lab was on Phenobarbital for seizures for the last 6 years of his life. The meds worked fine and he had no seizures while taking the pills

So sorry to hear that, Matt.

Google the difference in meds...If you have a Costco card, they do animal medications. Just have your Vet send a script to the Costco pharmacy. When I was giving hypothyroid medicine to my big, beautiful loving half Maine Coon, the price of medicine at Costco was half of what the Vet wanted. Give your pup a hug!

Hey, Judy? Thanks for reminding us COSTCO members we can do that.

It’s always a little awkward when the Costco pharmacist asks for the patient’s DOB and name and you have to explain that this patient is a dog and the DOB is basically a best guess/we picked a day.

Speaking of shadows, Emma has become mine this fall. Her kidneys seem to be doing well with the special diet and IV's. I gave up doing the IV's, just nervous and not good at it. But she's used to getting in the car, and tech now, so its worth $40 a week to see the vet. She's put on a pound since last spring.

She likes it now that I'm working in the living room, but boy will I get a sad look if I put on my cycling clothes or bring the fly rod and vest out. She does not like to be alone.
