N. Idaho

I fished yesterday. It was only the second time I’ve fished in October. I have always had something else going on in October. Taking the year off from coaching has opened up all sorts of opportunities. I elk hunted my buns off in September, something I haven’t done in 20 years and now fishing in October😀. It was likely the last “nice” day of the year for us. Snow forecasted above 3,000’ starting tonight.

The big caddis were out and about. It’s a hatch I’ve never seen nor fished. When I arrived at the river there were quite a few of them around. Unfortunately so we’re the leaves. HOLY SMOKES! With the forecasted weather change, there was quite a breeze that had all of those Cottonwood and Birch trees raining giant yellow leaves like a blizzard. It was beautiful but made the fishing a little challenging.

I was able to find some clean water and a big caddis with some movement added to it was yielding vicious takes by some really nice fish. My whole plan was to fish whatever water was in front of me with the intention of being in the right place for the golden hour. I had a report from the day before that told me to stay late and be where you want to be by 5:30. It was about 5:00 when I started fishing my way back to the area I wanted to end the day. The wind had laid down a bit, the leaves were starting to clear out and stack up in eddies leaving my long run pretty clean.

I got everything right for the big event…new tippet, clean greased up caddis. I made a cast and felt the weird sensation of my rod springing and then getting light as I laid down a cast. I looked up at the tip to see nothing connected and back down to the water to see my bugs and about 30’ of my fly line floating downs stream no longer connected to my rod. Somehow a brand new SA line just broke off🤬. I was neither prepared nor in the mood to modify and I was a mile away from my rig so I reeled it up and called it a season. The next time I’m outside I’ll be toting a weapon of some kind. It was fun while it lasted. I was alone and I didn’t carry my tripod so the pics are what they are. Long report for not much action😂.

Pretty fish & sorry about the hiccup. On the plus side, you were in an awesome great outdoors location. I'd give all of my flylines to be able to get out solo in wild places like that just one more time.

I’m definitely counting my blessings Jim!

Glad you got to see the hatch. Did you get your line head back? Last time that happened to me, I square knotted it back on and made do for the remainder of the outing.

I chased it down stream and retrieved it. If anyone had seen me it would have made for a good laugh. Not one of my more athletic moments.

I thought about making a field repair and normally would have. I was fishing because I felt like I shouldn’t waste the opportunity. I wasn’t really into it. My brain is still stuck on elk😂. Seeing the hatch was really cool…they are big bugs!
