Non-fishing related
Yeah overdue starting a new thread. Not much news other than i have dug up all our begonia bulb and put in the greenhouse . Raked swept the balance of leaves . Digging another yard of my compost tomorrow and planning greenhouse starting dates . Still have a lot of parsley and oregano growing and shallots , winter stuff all growing swiftly. Favas and biennial broccoli from Sept planting about 30” tall. Temps very very mild . Lowest temp here so far since winter began is about 38-40 degrees. Garlic is taller than usual for January. Narcissus , and other bulbs on there way. Have made a soil amendment list. Will get it in the ground/ raised beds in the next month- 50 lbs cottonseed meal, 25lbs kelp meal, 12 lbs bonemeal , some worm castings(12. Lg bags) maybe ght grab 30 lbs of alfafa pellets. Happy gardening!

Year 2 of the hosui pear tree in the back yard. Only a few fruit on it this year. Last year it has a bout of fireblight and had to be pruned back aggressively this few blossoms this year. It grew like crazy this year so I'm looking forward to next year's bloom and fruit.

I picked the first ripe fruit today, which may be the single best piece of fruit I've ever eaten. It was firm but creamy, highly aromatic, and incredibly sweet!

One of my neighbors has an Italian plum tree and gave me a bunch. Man those things are good. My folks had a plum tree when I was growing up and I always looked forward to eating them. So did our black lab. 😂

My second year in the Navy I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. I briefly lived on the base and ate in mess hall. One fall morning I walked in for breakfast and there was a big bin of Japanese pears. I'd never tasted or seen them before. Every morning afterwards, I'd fill my jacket pockets with those pears. Sweet, crispy, juicy, crunchy. So darn good!

I've got an Italian Plum that is absolutely loaded this year. Not sure what to do with them. The kids and I can only eat so many. Suggestions?

Pflaumenkuchen! A German plum cake. I grew up on the stuff and still drool when I think about it. My mother and grandmother both made it when the plums were in season.

You might have to consult with an older German lady for her secret recipe. Or, give her a bunch of plums in exchange for a warm cake. ;)

Food dehydrator. I bought some dried ones in the grocery store once, but they were awful. They aren't dried enough to keep, so they have preservatives added and don't taste all that good. I put them in a dehydrator and dry them until they are almost hard, like with any fruit. Bag 'em and put them in the freezer to kill any bugs that might be on them. They keep forever. I take them on hiking and backpacking and fishing trips where fresh fruit would get bruised and banged up. They are deliciously sweet, and I like to think they help keep me "regular."

It is canning season the last few weeks a bit at a time to avoid the fruit fly invasion and the lemonIMG_7790.jpeg IMG_7789.jpegjuice and clove repellent

Bottom pic is of a variety I got as a bonus called Bosque Blue Bumblebee. A novelty I would call it. Flavor is subtle and given my loven of old variety rich flavored tomatoes it is sort of meh! But cook down into marinara with all the others just fine

Planning my garlic strategy this year.
Question.
Do you pre-soak your garlic in peroxide, alcohol to kill off any disease, then soak in liquid fertilizer?
For a couple years I have lost beds of garlic to some type of fungus, disease or other issues. Watched a YouTube video on this.

Nope… not in 45 years… never get into the crazy seed saving soaks and stuff either. I do not enjoy fussing with gardening other than what I do and how I do it. My gardening is personal not an income source. Seeds are shared but is someone even mentions any elaborate prep requirements as necessary I politely point them elsewhere
