Thanks for the help. I guess I'm not that much of a nerd after all.

What did you run for leaders? I reviewed Nick’s albacore articles and leaders are not covered. When it is a year between trips a person likes to review things…
I’ve got about 5.5’ of 20lb on there now, looks like. Which is probably good. Maybe a tad short but probably does not matter.

On my 12wt and my jig rods, I run 30lb fluoro. Troll rods, much heavier.

Thank you. I am more asking about length. I’ve landed a ton of ‘em on 20 and 25 lb.

I have approx 6ft total length. I lost a fish at the bloodknot junction between 40lb and 30lb fluoro, my fault for maxing out the drag and not letting it run some more.
Next time I’ll just do straight 30lb, I used 40lb because I didn’t want the leader to cut into the fly line loop too much.

Nice window starting to tease me for next week. If it holds, I'm headed west out of CR once again 🥳
Do you ever watch Live Ocean from UW to make this determination? Lots of info on salinity, temperature, DO, phytoplankton concentration etc.

I haven't, no. I just use Ripcharts for the most part - and have enough contacts that are out there almost every fishable day, so use all that info to know where the fish are or should be. Everyone fishing out there is getting info from someone else that's fishing. Those that are catching fish do that at least.

Adding: That's true when I go out of the Columbia River at least. When I go out of Garibaldi, I'm usually choosing my own adventure. I usually look for the hard chloro and temp breaks, as those concentrate the fish more. Typically works out for me to just go off those.

I have pollution problems with fluorocarbon lines, so I have always used about 5-6' of 25 lb maxima clear mono. Seems like I am the one of the only ones running mono, fish don't seem to be much biased against it.

Very fair. This is pretty much the only fishery I still use fluoro for a long list of reasons, and I use so little of it, and never really break it off, that I can feel relatively ok about it. I haven't bought a new spool in like 5yrs.

Haven't considered that, but I should know better in my line of work. Effing Fluorine. Makes so many nasty compounds.

I use a short piece of thick 40 lb mono to connect to my fly line too for the same reason, I had the main line loop cut by the mono tippet when a running tuna threw a loop over my reel and caused a full strength line break. I do use loop to loop connections for that connection, and UV knot sense all the knots in my tuna leader. Then crank your drag, your fly reel definitely can't deliver 30 lbs of drag force anyways.

Have you folks been running squid or baitfish flies, and if squid what do you use/tie? I'm thinking of tying up some squid for the 13th.

don't you already have one?

I tried both on this trip, but only the smaller slim baitfish got the bites. I’ve caught fish on bigger articulated squid before on the slide/strip.

Good point, I guess mono isn’t a disadvantage out there with nothing abrasive around and easier to tie knots with too.
