PNW Fly Fishing Semi-Official Swap, Shop, Fish & Eat - May 17, 2025

I knew I missed something....dang, really wanted to cast that 12wt
What you really missed was the 2wt. Mark claims the ferrule is on a bit wonky, but it casts so sweet you’d never know it. In fact, dog-leg ‘boo rods might be the new parabolic—he’s just hedging about his new invention. It really is a great casting rod.

I kept forgetting to take photos. Had a great time meeting everyone, loved hearing their stories

Casting rods,

And the food…

Jerry’s food deserves its own thread of recognition. Best camp food I’ve ever had, but the dinner last night was crazy! Gorged ourselves on a feast, then Jerry showed up with round two: 5 gallons of seafood boil.

Oh, and Evan’s right. “Your mom” is hot but full-bodied—one of the best homemade hot sauces I’ve had.

(I don’t have a photo of your mom)

I cooked up what Zak brought (potatoes and onions plus I told him to bring the kielbasato make a poor man's meal). But the boil was my add on. I'm glad you all liked it and the breakfasts both days. Funny what @Zak brought was also what I brought for potluck, his was pre prepped so rolled with it.

But I'll have to admit that this was easy for me and I enjoy every minute of it.

Thanks for cooking, Jerry! It was great to meet and spend time with you!

I just got home. Fished a bit with @J Watrous in the Tilton, then stopped by this guy's fly shop on 508:

Mike was awesome, I gota tip about 'Smokestack Lake' nearby and bought some hot flies, including the one on the left:

Three hours of 'bobber down' action (and a sunburn!!) later, I got on the road north back home.

It was a real pleasure to meet folks in person! I'll look through photos and stuff later. Thanks, @Evan B , for getting us together!

It should be noted that sound does indeed travel quite well over water....probably also a good thing that y'all didn't hear ALL of the names I called that fish!

No complaints from me. I know those words and how to use them. They form the foundation of my "garage language". 😛

Stories...somebody wanted stories. Didja hear the one where I dragged my boat down, sought out the non-ethanol gas to fill up on the way down, looking forward to motoring around the lake to musky glory? See, I had spent early spring getting the motor running really nicely on the stand, and, Ace-in-the-hole, managed to convince Clarkman to ride the front of the boat, showing me how it's done and ultimately guiding me to sure success.

Except, at the dock, the motor wouldn't start. After about 40 pulls it was idling nicely at full choke. Hmm. Okay, well we motored up the lake to the first spot, where we just knew we were going to get 'em since a local had just told us the spot was holding musky, and idling down, the motor stalled. 15-20 minutes later (??) after about 75 pulls and removing two layers of clothes, the motor started again. I headed us back to the dock. It stalled out on the idle in, but we coasted to the dock. Barely.

I cast one of Clarkman's rods and flies off the end of the dock while he went to get his inflatable. So I guess I did go fishing. Got skunked.

You ever end up getting 'er fixed? That carb probably needs some lovin.

That sucks Matt. So frustrating. In fact, even more frustrating than actually fishing for musky. 😁
I'd get a carb kit, new plugs and new gas line unless you've already done those things. If you have, might be time to see if a local shop can squeeze it into their schedule. Good luck!

I have not had time. I won't have time until I get back from Florida.

I replaced the fuel line, plugs and filter but I've never messed with a carb like this and was avoiding it. I don't know what's in a "carb kit" but I thought I'd see if a spray-through carb cleaner is an option, and start there.

Mods feel free to move this to the boat repairs (of doom) thread. 👹

Mods think you should consider the benefits of fuel injected motors

I'm not sure if its the same as a motorcycle carb, but if it is, it's a pretty easy thing to clean a carb.

Pull it
Disassemble and scrub it
make sure the jets are clear
make sure the float and float needles are working correctly
new bowl gaskets
and reassemble

Again, thats for motorcycles but I assume its still roughly the same for a boat.

Clarkman got a smaller one I heard, think there was a pic...
😁🥳😁
