SFR Major Rant STOP IT! It stops NOW!

Sorta fishing-related
Vega w/ a 327 is ok...same with a Maverick w/ a 289/302.
Otherwise bad...

Pinto is another candidate.

Apparently you’re an idiot…US military had them on all their hummvee’s in Iraq…guess they just want them to look pretty…I know of a foreman on a mining site that used them on their fleet , vastly reduced maintenance time n cleaning air filters and cleaning out throttle bodies…and comparing my air filter with my traveling buddies during desert bombing runs while cleaning them in the field was first hand experience…

And nothing is more ghey than a Ford Taurus…
Yep huge idiot! Hey man, no need to get sensitive. Yeah I think your accessories are ghey but that doesn't mean you are wrong for having them.
But please don't use bullshit facts to try and Trump my 15 years as a diesel engineer which is a fancy term for blue collar grunt mechanic.
I would rather you just own it and just say you bought installed it cause everyone around you is doing it and you think it looks cool.
The particulate claim of the said snorkel is fucking stupid as well. That is not the direct design either.
Also, just because the military uses X does not make it reputable.
No name calling though dude. We're having fun here.

Also never claimed that my old Taurus was manly. What I did claim is that i took that car to more places than the vast majority of pussy jeep owners. You are the 2% that I am not referring to. However I knew you were on your way.

Or maybe a Corvair or a Vega?
Wait a minute ... I had a Monza Spyder that was a fun car even if Ralph Nader didn't like it ...

Everyone please read the first sentence to my OP. This is simply an opinion based comical roast on a specific automotive accessory.
If you own one of these ghey accessories please refrain from thin skin emotional responses and name calling.
Everyone here should be old enough, wise enough, and mature enough to enjoy a harmless roast.
I will create a ghey Taurus thread following this. No pictures will contain snorkels.

. . . and an ungodly long throw . . .
Brings back memories of my '72' and four wheelin' in Colorado. You'd better need second and pick your spot if you were going for it in low range!

Okay...first, I apologize...I didn't mean to disparage you with a name, my bad. Second, I didn't buy a snorkel for the cool factor...most of my off road builds were thought through with function first...and none of my friends have a snorkel...none. My first rig was a '74 Land Rover Series 3, then an old Jeep XJ...which I hydro locked going through (what I thought) was a large puddle on a small bridge over a creek...I didn't realize how deep the "puddle" was until I went thru and dove into water over my hood due to a partial collapse of the bridge. The snorkel was originally for the thought of driving through water.

However, I discovered that it's best use is in a dust environment...by far, since it's the mostly likely circumstance. I have two heads for my snorkel, one of which I use for the desert, since it has a centrifuge that directs heavier dust into a separate chute so it doesn't go directly into the air filter...It also intakes the air at a much higher point where the dust is less dense than at hood level. It's not perfect, and does not eliminate dust to the air filter, but it is an improvement. My buddies and I still wrap our air filters before a trip with ladies stockings as a prefilter for dust, and at the end of every day on the trail when we are in the desert like Death Valley or the hundreds of miles of dirt near me in southern Nevada, we pop our hoods and clean our air filters...all of my buddies are running JK's, a TJ and a Toyota FJ...and my air filter was the least clogged...I believe my eyes.

We good man. 👍

@Brute. the reason you saw snorkels on Hummers in Iraq is becuase they were USMC version. those are equipped that way from the factory becuase of contract. Marines are about the only serivce that even attempts to ford their vehicles these days. the other services just wait for a bridge or find a way to air transport.

during Sheild and Storm none of my divisions equipment had that stupid tube installed. in fact it was so rare to see one in the army that it immediately stood out as an oddity.
being a division composed of bradleys and M1's we all did air filter maintenance daily. at over $5k per set of 3 v pack filters per tank, we werent taking chances.

having said that, my UN landcruisers in liberia and rwanda all had snorks. that was a decision made by the UN vehicle mod shop in gibralter. their explanation was that it did help bring in cooler air to prevent overheating and fuel starvation.

@Jim F,
the vega version of the monza or the corvair version? i never got to play with a corvair but we had 3 of the vega based monzas at college and, well, they snoozed. great handling package, just no punch.

I had one on my Jeep as well with the same centrifuge for extra dusty environments (Coachella Valley, CA mostly) but I was usually too lazy to swap it out. Also not a pavement princess or mall crawler as it was a PITA to drive on the road compared to my other cars (sport sedans). I could GAF what other people think which my wife says is obvious from the way I dress...

Not the beast that Brute's brute is but it was a capable and fun rig. Wish I still had it.

Reduces particulate matter? The dude that told you that is extremely full of poopies. It does nothing. If you want to increase better "particulate matter" collection then get a higher quality filter like a reusable k&n air filter.
I generally agree with your assessment of the snorkel culture, but the oiled K&N filters are not great at limiting fine particulate passage. They are demonstrably worse than basic paper filters in dusty environments. The best thing to do is just get a bunch of paper filters and replace them frequently if you are in a dusty environment.
