Puget Sound

Unbelievably nice day on the water today. Unfortunately the fish didn't get the memo and were MIA for the most part for @ffb and I. Nice tides, good current, heavy fog cover this morning...hell we even snuck up on them silently thanks to Jon's new bow mount. Didn't matter. I don't think we put 10 fish to the boat total between us in a full day on the water. I think I landed 4 cutts and 3 rezzies or something. Tough.

Still, I hadn't been out in ages so it was great to have such a beautiful day to enjoy. No complaints here.

Yeah @Nick Clayton out fished me for sure, probably because I kept putting him on all the good spots with the new bow mount . Miserably slow day honestly. Think I'm going to switch it up somewhere new for a change of scenery next time out.

Loving that bow mount? The remote for mine shit the bed Sunday on the water and I almost cried and went home versus fishing without it. Such a game changer for SRC.

I will say very solid customer service from Minn Kota. Emailed them a pic of my proof of purchase with date and they shipped me a new remote out.

Yeah their customer service is great. My original motor had an issue with the motor itself. Instead of making me drive it to Everett which is the closest warranty repair center they sent me a new motor and shaft assembly and let me fix it.

I've been fishing without one for 5 years but it's definitely a big step up!

Just don't store coffee mugs too close to the heading sensor and it's a sweet setup

Yeah no kidding.

For anyone else with a newer Terrova. I don't know if it's the same on older models but at least the new models with "advanced GPS". After you calibrate the heading sensor if you place anything magnetic next to it, it'll make the unit go bonkers. Spot lock was working great and I set the cup next to the heading sensor on my console and the boat started swinging side to side in spot lock. I also noticed the indicator for motor position was wrong. I remembered reading the manual about not placing the sensor puck near metallic objects, moved the cup and the position indicator instantly went back to the correct position. Moved the cup close again and the indicator spun 90 degrees out of position. Took a while to figure that one out.

Pretty slow this morning, just too damn sunny and calm. It was a big tide drop but water was barely moving where I was, low tide came way too soon leaving a pretty small fishing window. Decided to call it early.

Got some fish but disappointed that I didn’t see any fry around, was hoping for some of that fry actions. Pink shrimp yet again.

Biggest one was 17”, nice to see some fat rezzies around too.

You mean the white puck with the blue light? That’s the compass if I remember correctly. The gps unit is in the head of the motor itself.
Makes sense if you put a metal object next to it it’ll go nuts. Instructions said to mount it away from engine, throttle, big electronics.

prior to having your super sweet electric motor would you let your outboard idle? and if so, did it tend to scare off fish?

I guess that’s my question…when fishing in the salt for cutts, does an idling motor tend to push fish away?

Before the bow mount motor we would set it up for a drift mostly with motor off, also used the anchor a lot too which is a PITA. Sometimes leave the main on idle or slow forward. I do think the main idling does scare away the fish somewhat.

Purely anecdotal, but I've never noticed that to be an issue with cutts. Prior to getting a boat with a bow mount I drifted with my motor running always. While guiding I have people of all casting skill level and often have to keep the boat pretty damned close to the fish, and never had an issue.

Rezzies on the other hand seem to be boat shy at times, and I feel the electric can help to some degree.

IMO it's more of a convenience and efficiency advantage that comes from the bow mount, but less noise can't be a bad thing either

Fished from 8:00 to 11:00 this morning. Totally socked in visibility was maybe 150’. With the high tide this morning there was plenty of debris to contend with while in route. Still not that confident navigating by electronics only.
Fishing was good though. Found some Cutts and a handful of resident coho. Lost a couple, one was a really nice cutt. Didn’t see any fry, but the fish were definitely looking up.

There was a good amount of fog for sure, I ran full throttle through it looking at my boat chart plotter and satellite map on my phone. But then my boat isn’t that fast, a whopping 26mph top speed.

Just need to swerve to dodge sticks here and there 🀣
