Ugly Duckling Fiberglass Phillipson

OK, so I'm trying to figure out what to do with this rod. It's a 7-1/2' Phillipson MF76L that has been completely refinished.

If this was on the Fiberglass Rod Forum that little "L" on the tag end of MF76L would catch some attention as it is a taper that folks rave about and search for. While there were lots of MF76 rods made by Phillipson, there were relatively few MF76L's made. The L designated a lighter weight taper made for a five weight line rather than the standard six weights popular at the time. The rod casts very well with a medium-medium fast action.

I picked this up years ago at Maltby Antiques and fished it a couple times in Montana but my weakness for bamboo rods keeps it in my closet. The rod had a yellow blank and green wraps from the factory but the blank was scratched up and the wraps were failing so I thought a refinish would be a good idea. But once I removed the wraps, guides and yellow blank paint I found that Phillipson used two different colors of fiberglass in the two halves of the blank. Probably part of the magic in the taper, but that factory paint was needed to give the rod a normal one-color appearance. I finished the rebuild, added a new seat and new cork and even found a cool era-correct tube by Phillipson. But it still stays in my closet while I reach for my bamboo rods going fishing.

So I'm putting it out there on this board that I'd like to sell it for a modest price (open to offers), locally, if anyone would be interested. I'm posting in this forum rather than the classifieds since the rod is fiberglass and, in its odd way, classic. If you're interested or know someone who might be please reach out. Tight lines, Ron

Do you ever fish extended poor weather where maybe the bamboo should wait it out? Maybe a reason to keep.
The phillipson glass I have fishes, for me, a line wt under what is listed That rod might sing with a 4wt. Would probably impress someone used to a 9’ graphite rod.

Is it just me, or is that weird that the tip section is completely different color than the butt section.

Not that this is an auction site at all, but what would you consider "reasonable"?

Seems like that'd be the perfect small stream trout rod that would literally do it all.

Ron noted the different color glass in his post and the fact that it might be the “magic” in the taper.

Very interesting concept.

Ohhhhh. Reading comprehension was difficult for me yesterday! 😆

When I did the refinish I was imagining a value closer to $200 but if someone wanted it for $100 I’d be good with that. Cheers!

Shoot, it may even work with a 3wt line too!

I have an old Berkley Parametric (the 6'3" one) that's labeled as a 6wt. It works great with anything from a 3wt up to a 7wt line.

I’ll try a four weight line and report back…
Happy to report that it does very well with a four weight line, even out to 60' for me. The standard MF76 rods were labeled as HDH line which I typically think of as a six, while these MF76L rods were labeled as HEH which I normally think of as a true five weight. But a four did just fine.

The joy of glass. My 1972 Fenwick 6# is the same, being able to handle multiple weights..

Hey there para Adams, just came across this thread and was wondering if you ever offloaded your ugly duckling Phillipson?

If not, I’d definitely be interested.

I still have it and would still like to find a new owner who will appreciate and use it. Shoot me a message if you'd like to see and try it. Ron
