OK, so I'm trying to figure out what to do with this rod. It's a 7-1/2' Phillipson MF76L that has been completely refinished.
If this was on the Fiberglass Rod Forum that little "L" on the tag end of MF76L would catch some attention as it is a taper that folks rave about and search for. While there were lots of MF76 rods made by Phillipson, there were relatively few MF76L's made. The L designated a lighter weight taper made for a five weight line rather than the standard six weights popular at the time. The rod casts very well with a medium-medium fast action.
I picked this up years ago at Maltby Antiques and fished it a couple times in Montana but my weakness for bamboo rods keeps it in my closet. The rod had a yellow blank and green wraps from the factory but the blank was scratched up and the wraps were failing so I thought a refinish would be a good idea. But once I removed the wraps, guides and yellow blank paint I found that Phillipson used two different colors of fiberglass in the two halves of the blank. Probably part of the magic in the taper, but that factory paint was needed to give the rod a normal one-color appearance. I finished the rebuild, added a new seat and new cork and even found a cool era-correct tube by Phillipson. But it still stays in my closet while I reach for my bamboo rods going fishing.
So I'm putting it out there on this board that I'd like to sell it for a modest price (open to offers), locally, if anyone would be interested. I'm posting in this forum rather than the classifieds since the rod is fiberglass and, in its odd way, classic. If you're interested or know someone who might be please reach out. Tight lines, Ron
