Kehei Hawaii in 5 days

Sooo looking forward to spending 2 weeks relaxing, sunshine & beach time with my wife. I also plan on hitting several beaches at sunrise DIY for a few hours wading looking for bones or GT's. A hook up would be awesome. I am packing two 8wt rods.

A big shout out to the Troutwater fly shop in Cle Elum for hooking me up with several choice flys. They were familiar with the area and had the flies in stock.

I hope to post a report and pics when I return.

Go gettem. I hop on a plane in 3 weeks for Honolulu

It was 10 years ago I fished over there. Saw bone fish in the surf but never connected. Did get small Travalle but nothing on the grand scale. Cool watching the whales come in close to shore…

So nice. We loved Kehei snorkeling at Ulua Beach, Kinaole Grill Food Truck for coconut prawns and sunset pizza at Manoli's when the egrets fly in to roost.

Remember...don't get sunburnt on the first day

Ulua Beach is so cool. Such a great place to snorkel. Parking can be a bit crazy, but worth it if you get it.

Also a great place to swim with the rental car key-fob in your pocket. :ROFLMAO: Cracked it open, washed with the nice fresh water at the bathrooms and let it dry in the sun. Worked like a charm!
Can't wait for a report Jim!

Thanks for the car fob tip.. I will have to give it a try. 🤣🤣

Thought I would check the carry on criteria for Alaska Airlines. Maximum fly rod case length. 62in is their length max. Got out the tape measure and 64in was the length length of my Cabelas double two piece rod case. Well @##@@! being the tight wad old retired fart I have become I was not going to pay the $45 checked baggage fee. Let alone let some baggage gorilla handle my two custom built (by me) flyrods. With necessity being the mother if invention. A quick measurement of the rods revealed I has a 3in excess. So pealed the cover off revealing the two pvc tube's. Fired up the old chop saw cutting off 3 inches. Re taped the tube's, slid the cover back on. I am now the proud owner of a 60in double Alaska Airlines carry-on approved fly rod case. Dodged that bullet like a cheeto man.17403604394192650240421946507660.jpg

Be sure to bring all your own tackle. The fishing shops last October were surprisingly bare of simple things like 8lb or 12 lb mono. I always bring a small surf rod with me as the fishing is excellent from the beach and the rocks, but the fishing shops were not much help. The only shop that had any inventory was the main store in Kahului. I forgot my glove last year and managed to get my palm lacerated by one of the fish....some of them have some serious spines! I've never had any luck getting a bonefish, but have had a lot of fun with papio (?), goatfish, trumpet fish, and even barracuda. Some kind of silver mackerel looking thing puts up a good short fight from the beach too. Papio are the most fun....serious fight. Intermediate sinking line from shore and no kids or dogs in your backcast : ). Whipping with a gear rod is also a lot of fun!
I guess we need a license now?
A lot of homeless now. I don't know if I've been lucky or not, but have had no problems with my car at the parking areas. I leave nothing visible though.
You'll have a great time. Dang snorkelers and sea turtles are everywhere though : ).
Eating spam musuibi as a short break as the sun comes over the island....priceless! Geez...I might have to look at airfares....

Watch out for the tails of tangs & surgeonfish...they have some very sharp knives attached...I second the spam musubi, usually purchased from a 7-11...
