One practical thing to know about a lenticular cloud or cloud cap over Mt Rainer...
In 1974 the instructor of the Mountain Weather section of the Mountaineers Basic Climbing Course said that a lenticular cloud over Mt Rainer is an indicator of precipitation over Western WA and the Cascades within 24 hours. Since then, living with a view of the mountain from home, that has indeed been a VERY consistent predictor of rain (or snow).

I think those are called Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds.

Thanks. Guess I missed Boot's post...

"They are also known as billows or fluctus clouds".

With all due respect to Calvin and Kleinholtz, these will now be forever known as fluctus clouds in my effed-up brain. Fluctus may even find it's way into daily language. Just rolls off the tongue.

Here's a boring update: Driving into work the other day I thought these might shape up into Kelvin-helmholtz clouds but they never happened.
