17 Minute Fishing Season in Michigan

When you get 17 minutes to fish, it could be an indication that the fishery is not very sustainable. Just a thought.
The season isn't a time limit. For the past 25 years the season has been limited to six sturgeon harvested per year. It closes as soon as the 6th fish is speared. That might be sustainable.

I spent many a day in a tar paper ice fishing shanty staring into water watching for a pike or musky to come after the decoy fish below. Still have a few decoys around somewhere. Used to hang them on the Christmas tree. I think my brother still has the spears.

Agreed, but if 6 fish each year is all the population has to spare....

In the spring there is a spawning run of these sturgeon up the Black River tand requires volunteers to patrol the river to prevent poaching during that time period

It is going that way for some PNW sturgeon fisheries.

Spot shrimp season in central sound is already only 4 hours per year.
