Flyfishing Kihei Hawaii

Jim Allen

Steelhead
Headed to Kehei Maui last week of Feb for two weeks. My 8wt will be accompanying me. I plan on hitting the beach at sunrise several mornings during the 2 week stay. Have my 8wt set up with 200yrds of 30lb backing and a bonefish specific flyline. I also purchased multiple 16lb tapered leaders and fluorocarbon tippet.
My big question is what flys to have on hand. I have attached a pic of my Maui fly box. I there anyone with recent intel and what would add??

I bring quite a few flies as I lose a lot to the lava...and early in the morning...I'm not going under for it! Clousers are a good bet as I've caught quite a few other fish other than a bone. If you decide to try from the rocks, a stripping basket helps. I'm not giving away any secrets, but the Kihei boat launch has a nice breakwater to fish off. I've always caught something there.

Please share trip reports!

That box looks good, especially the right side if you’re targeting bones. If you decide to chase the trevally, you might want more flashy streamers.

I’m far from an authority on HI flyfishing, but this is what my Hawaii box looks like:

The yellow and white ones on the left are a baby goatfish imitating clouser, which is supposed to be the ticket over there. I never caught a fish on them though, I had the most luck with the chartreuse flashy flies on the right side.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

LESS FLASH… tan and brown mantis shrimp with egg sacks…. if you want a guide PM me and I’ll send you his info.

Billy Copper has fished in HAWAII AREAS of late. Billy Copper has PERFORATED THE HAWAIJ FISH SCENE!!!!! He is a major figure in the fish scene.
