U.S. drafts plan to bring grizzly bears back to Washington’s North Cascades (WAPO)

Been awhile since this has come up, but predation of livestock in several E WA counties is a growing problem.

@2:21 check out the map showing where Griz are being sighted in Western WA; near Monroe, Mukilteo(?!), near the Stuck River in Auburn, South of I-90 just east of Edgewick. Does any other state have sightings near population centers of this size?

That map can’t be right, bear sighting sure but grizzly bears in Mukilteo and Auburn? No way.

Several bears encroaching in vicinities adjacent to major airport travel. Need to ensure barriers in place before moving forward!!!

Anchorage has 286,000 folks, and in the summer there are a pile of bears in Chester ck and Campbell ck, which run right through town.
A small village in comparison to the 4,000,000 folks in the greater SEA area that hasn't seen a grizzly in nearly 150 years.

Hold on a second…so you’re saying that local TV News might manipulate their presentation to make it more dramatic? Say it ain’t so!

Reported sightings are not verified sightings. Don’t believe everything that’s implied on TV!

You referenced Auburn (pop. 83K), Monroe (19K), and Mukilteo (21K) in your post.

We get it, the concept of bears in the natural world completely terrifies you 🙄
A comparison of Anchorage to the Seattle metro area is just silly. My first posts on this subject remain my primary concern. The bears didn't disappear beacuse of habitat loss 150 years ago. Commercical hunting trapping aside, people who lived in that lush habitiat 150 years ago killed them because they didn't mix well. And now encounters between bears and humans, and their livestock; the livelihood for a large number of people in E WA in an area that hasn't seen Grizz in 150 years, will not go well for the bears.
A good recent article

Even W WA tribes argree though some of their concerns won't stand up to scientific scrutiny.
“The bear is definitely a big part of our culture here in Indian country, as all the animals are,” said Yanity, a former chair of the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians. “But as time has moved on, things have changed.” Specifically, he worried the bears would endanger some of their food and economic resources. “We face declining salmon,” he said. (Research in the government’s plan shows that the bears aren’t expected to endanger the fish population.) Lenon, a member of the Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribal Council, echoed Yanity’s concern about the salmon and said his people would hunt the bears if they were reintroduced. He then stated a belief seemingly shared by many in the room: “These people,” he said, referring to the federal officials in attendance, “don’t give two cents about any of your human lives. Because I’ve told them already, you’re going get people killed in the North Cascades.”

Grizzly bear near Auburn.

Somebody's Turkey dinner was laced.

Fake News??? I have to admit that sightings this early so close to Puget Sound are incredulous but in July 2024 there was one confirmed bear south of I-90 documented by a graduate student. There might not be a way until it is killed (again, not good for the bear, and odds are high it will be) to determine if it is a "stocker".

And finally this
Brian, with the in-coming Admin. I wouldn't worry about seeing much of any wildlife.
No matter where you stand politically, E WA ID, Montana, & WY Congressional representatives will be all over this

A lot of folks have problems dealing with relative risk...even if true, grizzly bear attacks would be an infinitesimal risk compared to the number of annual Washington state traffic deaths (>800 in 2023) and annual traffic accidents that is basically a 'big yawner' to its inhabitants.

Hell...I'm more concerned about the bears' safety than I am for the human population's. Got more than enough people...too few bears.

More otter attacks in Washington than grizzly attacks...
😁

Plus grizz would help deal with the urban tent city problem...just equip the wildlife enforcement officers with narcan so they can resuscitate any bears suffering from a fentanyl overdose.

Agreed, but the majority of people living adjacent to the recovery zones in WA have more risk.

Exactly! These are Cattle lobbyist regions where the EPA will be all but nullified by Zeldin. Unfortunately, the rest of the biosphere will suffer as well as it won't stop with the eliminaiton of Griz!

Apparently the folks living in the city of Vancouver BC aren't spazzing out about their grizzly bear neighbors.

The way to mitigate the ranchers' concerns (expressed through their legislators) about predation is to make it easy to get compensation for associated loses.

That would be more than fair, considering the damage their open range hoofed locusts inflict on public lands.

Black bears are often mistaken for grizzly bears. Like in that film clip of the bear taking a chicken, that wasn't a grizzly. I am still doubtful that we will see a major increase in grizzly bears in WA because I don't think all the habitat requirements are abundant enough. Unlike the wolves who understand that cattle equals slow elk.
