Non-Fly Dirtbag river Coho '24'

I know a lot of very good anglers getting blanks on these coho in my section of the Columbia. The fish are absolutely there, and in numbers. I checked and I caught plenty of fish by now the last several years doing the same program and in water that was actually warmer than this year. So not sure what's going on, but finding out it isn't just a "me" thing.
At least good to know they're out there. Not seeing any mixed in with the steady parade of dark chinook in a trib yesterday, had me wondering if they'd been wiped out by nets, running late, or just no shows.

I called the Sandy hatchery yesterday , they said about 400 coho have returned , a far cry from this time last year. Wish they would post it on line somewhere .

Don't make me hafta come down there! :)

Had a great day with @_WW_ we limited in a few hrs, thanks for the ride Wayne!

My Columbia fish remain both plentiful and not in the mood. Back at it tomorrow

My hardware spinning rods braid is getting frayed, nasty, and prone to tangling. Thinking of putting some new line on. Do you guys run mono or braid for throwing spinners and spoons? Added sensitivity of braid is nice but i constantly worry about snagging up, especially as I’m not mending like the way I do with floats. Although my double unis to attach the mono bumper are pretty good it is an additional point of failure to consider
Mono (Maxima) on my spin setups. Not perfect, but the best I have found overall. Braid is fantastic for bobber fishing, but it absolutely sucks for just about anything else, IMO. Because it's so limp, when you get slack in braid, it gets tangled around itself, around reels, and around guides, none of which are good. Mono does tend to get twisted badly when fishing spinners without good swivels, and when that happens, it's at least as crappy as braid and maybe worse, but it's a lot easier to untangle mono than braid. Mileage will vary!

Braid is excellent for twitching. No tangles for me.

I don't share the same struggles with braid that you seem to. And I have a LOT of braid rigged up.

One thing I don’t use is braid for it float fishing or on my centrepins. It’s mono all the way out here for most people. 12-20lb maxima ug or chameleon. But I use braid and leader for almost everything else on spinning and bait caster.

I've seen dozens of braid issues for people twitching, braid is only for bottom fishing or float fishing.
I only run15# ultra green for twitching, just so I can rip it out of the brush or I'll end up pulling the boat over.
But I dont fish like most and my boat usually will out fish most people!

I use braid with mono bumper but feel guilty about the amount of plastic I have left at the river bottom as a result. Snags usually result in my double uni breaking off instead of my jig

I fish a short mono leader also. Have you tried the FG knot? My breakoffs occur at the jig. FG stronger than non slip loop.

I mean, I thought it was pretty cool.

I just use a Crazy Alberto. I'm not patient enough for the FG even if it is the best one. Especially not fun to tie while on the water.

But both superior to the double uni. Not just strength, but also lower profile for ease of casting.

I tie them at home. Never had one break on the water.

The Crazy Alberto is fine for strength but I feel like the FG flies through the guides better. If I snapped off during a good bite I'd probably use the CA to retie in most otw situations.

I hooked two on spinners yesterday, but both came unpinned and it’s because I had a slightly bent tip on a Gami siwash. So pissed at myself. One of them was a chromer.
