NFR 2024 Garden and Growing Things thread

Non-fishing related
I have about 25 hardware cloth lids fitted to beds of various heights not to protect from bunnies though there are some in town. For everything else. I have gotten good at making them and many scratches and pokes in the process. 1/2” grid galvanized. Large ones have 1x2” fres on the bottom edges. Lots rolls of 3 and 4’ wide rolls have been purchased as well as #6 x 3/4”pan hd screws and #6 washers.

This is kind of a cool one. Chupon de Malinalco, a tomatillo variety from Malinalco Mexico. When yellow ripe the flavor is reminiscent of giant ground cherries mixed with sweet yellow tomatoes. Sweet, tropical and no tartness whatsoever. Traditionally used for salsas which is how I plan to use them. They are quite good just to eat raw though. I’ll definitely plant again next year.

Where did you find the seeds for those?

Since I planted 7-8 aji plants and Bulgarian carrot peppers , added bee magnet plants this year, it seems as if all my sweet peppers have a capsacin infection… peppers meant to be sweet mild and great in salads are deceptively mouth and lip burning hot. So all the peppers are becoming a creative hot sauce recipe

Ahh who cares on this!! Basically the KNOWN IDEA is to just throw some water in there every now and then. That's the KNOWN MENTALITY when it comes from there!! Pretty much the same across all plants these days! It's the KNOWN IDEA.

That was a tease. It worked! There is that and a bunch of other garden things to know from experience and personal obsessions. ;)

I agree an exceptional tomato year. I picked the last (8 that were nearly ripe) of my Brandywine yesterday before the 34-degree low last night killed the plants. In the last month from a Momotaro and a Brandywine that were in a metal raised bed I provided more than 50 tomatoes (with a number in the 1# range) to friends and neighbors as well as all the wife and I could eat. Also brought in about 30 long keeper tomatoes - the first time I have grown them so it will be fun to see how they ripen over the next couple months, fresh tomatoes in December?

Momotaro was my production champion this season as well. My large varieties were kind of okay, but I backed off my usual tomato care fanaticism this year

I have a mini farm that has a half-acre of nothing but heirloom tomatoes. Also has produce direct from other farmers. I hope it
never goes away and becomes a housing development. The back side of my casa faces south and gets cooked every summer with no
water source. I grew up in suburban Portland with a growing garden and a hunting/fishing Dad. Y'all make me jelly....

Decent tomato year for me. Good not great. I never seem to get a lot of heirlooms.
I can't eat as many as I produce each year, so the neighbors are happy to have fresh tomatoes as well as zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, cilantro and basil. Most received a fresh coho or two as well. I got apples, plums, the best blueberries I've ever had, fresh eggs, pesto from my basil and some other good things to eat in return.
