2024 Bison Score

I’ve been in YNP four times this Spring and by the behavior of many tourons, more of these incidents are inevitable. At this time of year the bulls are isolated away from the young herds and are not only easy to see (very large brown objects) and avoid. On the other hand, cows with calves and young males then to herd up and hang around meadows along roadways. Tourons stop their vehicles mid-road, get out and get too close, always inching closer for a better photo. I’d be highly supportive of the NPS citing and fining anyone who blocks traffic or intentionally breaks the 25 yard rule. Won’t happen and the mayhem will continue.

Last Sunday while walking the Fountain Flats Freight road near the 1st Iron Bridge, I encountered an isolated bull grazing at the edge of the road hemmed in by trees on both sides. There was no way but to venture off road to circumvent his position at a safe distance to reach the river which I did. Upon my return, he was still there grazing while a family with small children on bicycles casually road up within a few feet of him to snap a few pics—stupid as hell and obvious to the damage he could cause.

In my opinion, the large bulls are the most worrisome as they go wherever they want to go, oblivious to any humans that might be around. When fishing off-road they can inadvertently corner you, blocking your retreat or escape route. One’s head must always be on a swivel as they can materialize out of the trees at your back without a sound. More than once I’ve been forced into circuitous retreats to avoid being cornered in an untenable position too close to a large bull.

Pics from a few years back. Caught unawares and no where to go. I was worried I might have to take a swim.

It seems only logical that they would do this.

What a maroon! I guess this is the kind of person that thinks meat comes from a white Styrofoam box in the store.

I've only visited Yellowstone once, way back in the fire year of 1987, and people were idiots with buffalo and moose even then. One evening I was camping in my pup tent at a campground, and in the middle of the night, my tent pegs all along one side were pulled up and my tent fell over. I scrambled out of the tent to see a buffalo butt ambling away from me; he or she had gone to the tree next to my tent to scratch, then wandered off, pulling my tent pegs out as it passed by. I collected fur from that tree and still have it somewhere!

Not a fine.. lifetime ban from all national parks, subject to arrest for atrempting to enter after ban for anyone intentionally moving towards dangerous wildlife..
And maybe also a ban from having hunting/fishing/trapping license in any state.

Those are big critters, and there is no way I'm getting anywhere near them. Fast too!

You guys are looking at this all wrong. We should encourage those who are not outdoors savy, to recreate in our nationals parks. For two reasons: 1.) Darwin will find a way 2.) They don’t discover and crowd our cherished blue lines.

As a big Bison fan, hoping they have a good year.
Tough competition with the Bears, but the Bison's running game is solid, and while the Bears can climb (air game), defense wins championships, and those horns make for a stout defense.
My pick, Bison to win it all...

Bison 14
Tourons 3

😁

No BUT only because that's the feds telling the states what to do...

It's so weird to me that after all this has gone on and been in the media for years now how can these events still be so commonplace? Are we as a society really that brain dead stupid? That among other things going on in our country at the moment I am forced to conclude that yes, we really are that stupid..

About 15 years ago my good friend and I were traversing Jellystone heading to Jackson Hole and while driving we witnessed a father and son whom obviously had different cultural norms walk up at arms length to a black bear to take a photo with the bear. I told my friend to slow down and I pressed record on my camera, wondering if Darwin would appear. Fortunately for them Darwin never arrived and unfortunately for them, their bias was confirmed that it is a big petting zoo.

Makes sense, but how about a ban in the state(s) in which the felonies occur?
