SFR Malicious Compliance: City laws say boats must be stored behind a fence...

Sorta fishing-related
Peanuts…they are evolving in real time…growing into trees now…probably to make it harder for the elephants to reach ‘em…
I don't like peanuts much. No clue how they grow and don't care. Has no bearing on the issue.

Yes I agree but property values are not protected rights.. property is. There are no saftey issues created by non running cars or boats being stored on private property.

I should be able to grow peanut trees on my property regardless of my neighbors allergies.
There could be safety issues that stem from.storing boats or cars in a driveway. They could block sight distance and cause a very real traffic hazard. Blocking sight distance is a per peeve of mine. I have seen them leak vehicle fluids causing environmental damage albeit minor. If you stored a bunch of cars, there is a real fire danger. I have seen this danger come to fruition for a company who stored cars in violation of local codes.
While I very much agree that this particular incident is silly and an overeach, I don't think that property rights extend as far as Rob believes they do. That is, unless you are in New Hampshire. Live Free or Die.

Why jump to extremes? We're talking about a guy and his boat..
I don't think anyone here is arguing that one guy with one well kept boat is an issue.

Laws have to be made for the extremes because the stupidest people (and there are many) will always push things that far and affect others.

It is a bummer for the rest of us who just want to have a boat in the driveway or work on a project car or have a guest room in an outbuilding. But it's also what allows a bit of order in the world. The trick is finding the right line in the sand between liberty and chaos.

I am opening a toxic waste disposal site on my property. That and a 24 hour a day car crushing service.

After all, it's mine.

The neighbors are super pissed, but I told them Rob said it was OK, and they are not entitled to an opinion.
:)

I actually have anxiety about my pizza oven I built right now. Sends a LOT more smoke than I'm comfortable with rolling over my neighbor's fences while it's warming up (fine once up to temp). I'm rebuilding the chimney to see if getting it further up in the air helps.

i think my neighbors would be 100% justified having issue with me cooking in my outdoor pizza oven as it currently stands.

Promise to share some of that artisanal level pizza and your neighbors will likely regard the initial clouds of smoke as a mouth-watering 'smoke signal'.

I used to run my smoker a lot when I lived in one of the Eastside suburbs. Did a lot of brisket for a while. 10-12 hour smokes with what I though was a nice, pleasant odor wafting through the neighbors back yard.
They, however, did not find it agreeable.
Actually wrote a letter stating my smoker activities were hazardous to health and prevented them from use of their property on the weekends

I wish I would have known they weren't entitled to an opinion, instead I moved the smoker to the other side of the house.

Eh, the neighbors I'm worried about aren't really ones I want to have pizza with. The one behind me especially. My anxiety is more "the less I have to interact with him, the better."

Understandable....

If the chimney height modifications don't prove to be sufficient perhaps your pizza feasts shall be controlled by prevailing wind direction forecasts.

The real problem is we started with a line in the sand between liberty and chaos and we have redrawn it about a million times already now trying to eradicate chaos so now we have little liberty left.

Except you don't understand how far I believe property rights should extend. But I would suggest that according to the law of the land should be more permissive than prohibitive.

The world changes, friend. A line drawn for horses isn't going to help with cars. A line drawn for letterpress isn't going to help with the internet. A line drawn for raising a few pigs on your farm isn't going to help with an industrial hog slaughterhouse.

You sound like a good neighbor with common decency, respect and empathy for others--the kind of neighbor I'd want living next door.

An interesting one I've always thought needed more proverbial lines drawn: Neighbor has giant tree that is leaning in your house's direction. The next ice storm could send that baby in to the dirt (the dirt below your house). Neighbor doesn't care. What do?

I had four such trees and took them down. They would've fallen on one of three houses, with a 33% chance of it being mine. Glad we did because we've since had two ice storms that took down a LOT of trees nearby, several of which went in to houses.

But yeah: Neighbor is doing whatever he wants with his property, and negligence puts your property at potential risk. What's the solution?
