Do NOT trout set!

I repeat, do NOT trout set. I DID strip set nicely into a couple of sticks.

Tally for the morning: 4 follows, 1 eat, 1 trout set. 😬

A VERY nice fish about 2 rod lengths away.

Sorry, no pics....because you know, I trout set.

Ok, here's the pic of my report...

Randy,
You ever use a two handed strip or is that not possible out of your craft or not good a good technique for muskies?

Boat side eats are always tricky in the best of circumstances when seated so close to the water. But, I still completely blew that one.

Two-hand retrieves are definitely utilized depending on action im trying to impart on the fly.

If I could have every fish back that I missed due to trout setting I'd have enough fish for the rest of my life lol.
Same!
The dreaded trout set. Kills you in everything but trout fishing, and damned if I can stop doing it!!!
Oddly, I'm usually the other way around....strip setting when I should be trout setting. A friend of mine pointed out that it was likely due to all of my forays into euro trash fishing over the last several months.

Over 2 weeks of tarpon fishing in the Keys @albula put me on many nice fish. With my incredible casting skills I managed one solid eat. You can guess what came next....

Still haunts me to this day.
I really shouldn't laugh....

This is why you should swing, then you won't have this issue, but I'm sure you're talking about something huge and toothy

I have the opposite problem, bass-setting on the trouts. I was fishing for trout on the Salmon River several years ago with a guide, picking up some nice trout on dries. After a few missed strikes, and a couple of airborne smaller trout, she turned to me and said "By any chance, did you bass fish a lot when you were younger?" Which of course I did.

I feel so much better about myself after reading this thread. I came up with bupkus on winter steel this year, not for lack of grabs; ya you know the rest. As mentioned already in this thread, there is a time and place for the trout-set. Like last night when I was trout fishing and missed fish because after missing three winter steel grabs I have finally knocked the trout-set out of myself.

If I had a dollar for each time I trout set....

Trout setting… you guys need to find more ways to mess up like me. I can be very creative…bang the rod off the boat, punch a stripping basket, scrape the tip on a rock during the 8. So many more ways to f up a hook set than trout setting :).

Oh I can be creative... the other night I decided to troll why I put away my 3 other rods and stowed gear. Right in the middle of breaking down a rod I get a takedown, drop the rod I'm holding and almost step on it's tip while grabbing the trolling rod.. and of course I missed the fish. Multi-tasking: ensuring you fail at 2 things simultaneously...

After two days of catching pike I thought I had my brain dialed. Ducked in a tiger lake on the way home and had my first experiences with fish that would put their nose on the fly but REFUSE to eat. Then one did....yep...you got it. You don't trout set on a muskie. Dummy.
