Why is this so hard? I've been to Ukraine a dozen times and I'm about 50:50! We don't say The France, The Germany...
For my part, I was taught, during USSRs existence and the prior history, that “the Ukraine”was an agricultural region and the breadbasket of Europe.

Ukraine as an independent country called just “Ukraine”, vs Ukrainian people’s republic or Ukrainian soviet socialist republic, is only about 30years existence.

‘The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. ... In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, a Ukrainian national movement for self-determination emerged, and the internationally recognized Ukrainian People's Republic was declared on 23 June 1917. The Ukrainian SSR was a founding member of the Soviet Union in 1922. The country regained its independence in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.”

I recall that as well the Ukraine an ag region… the deal is i was there twice for a month each visit. A lot of changes in what regions are named in 30 years. I have to look at a map to figure out where.

I remember in Jr. high school in the mid sixties it was over simplified to Ukraine = Ag region.; Taiga = forest region; Steppe = plains region. 😚

My grandmother was born in Russia, not far from the Ukraine border.
She migrated here with her mother and sister in 1913. Her sister was ill when they arrived and was sent home, never to be seen again by my grandmother.
I’m not sure if that event made my grandmother the way she was, but if Putin is as stubborn and unloving as she was getting him to withdraw or have a change of heart on this is highly unlikely.

There has been some pretty remarkable journalism produced as a by product of the tragic global situation caused by another egomaniac driven only by his own best interests and greed for power. The written word can be a powerful sword.

The last paragraphs were worthy of reading more than once.

I found it sad that so many reporters and politicians demanded to know whether Russian sanctions would mean that people would to need to pay more for gas. Surely we are not so selfish, so materialistic and so feeble as to reject our obligation to other free people because filling up our tanks will cost a little more.

For their courage and idealism, for their defense of democracy and international peace, we can say to Ukrainians and Russian protesters, well done. Moreover, we can pray for their survival and be willing to make sacrifices to support them in the weeks and months ahead.

Yes it was . One of the museum directors was a hunter… showed me his camp pics of red deer hunts and bear hunting. He ss his hunting buds made a big camp out in the taiga … bear hunting with black powder muskets and rifles. We had what would call exotic meals… red deer, bear roasts and jerkey… and some kind of roasted long necked swan or grebe or something… birch juice and bilberry juice etc

That's the legacy of that corrupt fuckwad Walter Duranty and his deliberate misuse and mischaracterization of Ukraine as a "region of the Soviet Union." That is also exactly how Stalin wanted the world to view his southern grocery store....not as a country that was actually older than Russia, but as a mere farming region that was part of his empire. This is how you gradually rob a people of their culture and identity. And then you stuff as many ethnic Russians as you can into that "region" and intermarry and further muddy the waters.

Except...it didn't work in the long haul. Because these are Ukrainians. The Ukrainians never lost their identity, language or religion. They had to hide them, for a while, but they never lost them.

Remember that movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding?" And how the daughter got really annoyed with her dad when he wouldn't stop talking about the greatness of Greece and the Greek people? Swap Greece for Ukraine and that's my life, LOL. Extremely proud of their heritage, as they should be. My dad's family (lots of cousins, lots of hugs and kisses and FOOD haha) all told me "you will never find a Ukrainian say they came from "the Ukraine," that term is a lie pushed onto us by that Russian bastard Stalin!"

Regardless of what we were taught in school, the name changed in '91. Thirty years is long enough to learn to use it correctly. Let's all pray it stays exactly as it is.

My relatives in Zaporizhzhia say there are houses that are being blown apart by Russian Grad. People dying in their houses.
I'm afraid to know about the people I worked with there, I'm waiting to call. I traveled the Ukrainian industrialized areas. Those areas look like they are being targeted, sad to see.

I remember meeting with Russians a few times at factories in Ukraine who were livid that the Ukrainians were marketing products developed during the USSR days, they felt like Ukrainians were stealing "their" technology.

I hope your friends are okay. And the irony of Russians saying Ukrainians stole something from them? I'll let that just ride......

Praying for your friends....

This is flat out bullsh!t, unless 'we' is just you.

US intelligence has been saying for weeks, even months now they expected Russia to invade, as has many independent analysts.
Not sure where you get your info, but probably due for a new source if that's what you're getting.

Lol
JFC

Everything I read in the MSM , well all media really has been he might invade, potential invasion. But the people that are talking to now are saying. Yeah we knew it was a done deal based on what Putin said around Christmas.
Most of the news I have been reading is MSNBC and Fox. In short one extreme left and one center right.

Like I said, you need to find a new source of information...

You have internet, and so you must know there's more options than the two you listed.

I wish you luck, and encourage you to broaden your information sources.

I just gritted my teeth. In the early 1990's (post 1991) Ukraine was a mess of mafia and oligarchs but they had really turned a corner to develop a western economy. They still have a long way to go, but they are trying.

Young Ukrainians are some of the most optimistic people I've ever met...now they are being brave...Russians should be embarrassed and humiliated.

If you really think one of those is "center right" someone has sold you some bad medicine.

Only country I know with "the " in its title is The Gambia. Several of my coworkers are from there and are very proud of that fact.

I miss the Walter Cronkite and Huntley/ Brinkley days of news. That is why I do not bring up news shows these days. For in print news with associated on air shows there are a lot better choices. IMHO best to not talk about them either.
