NFR Let's talk about "fat wood".

Non-fishing related
There once was a lady from Skamania,
Who suffered- Doc says- from hemicrania,
Well it took but one half of her half-decent brain,
For her good side to strike a match and explain,
You light the Fatwood to get a great flamia

While I have no fatwood lore to add to this discussion, I can report (warn?) that the best, most instantly flammable kindling we have on hand is the cedar roofing shakes my husband pulled down when he re-roofed the shed!
We used it to start our backyard firepit, exclaimed in delight at its effectiveness, then turned around and contemplated our house's roof...of the same material. Unprintable phrases were uttered.

Shortly thereafter, we had our home re-roofed with flame-retardant shingles

Just when the last cinder was about to flicker and die on this discussion, Matt B throws on a new log of "thread sustainin' fatwood" and we are back in business.... Mid November PNWFF Discussion Board Action is HEATING UP!
Haha well I certainly wasn’t expecting to think about @Jim in Anacortes ‘ eponymous FAT WOOD thread when I ran to McLendon for bird seed and light bulbs. And there it was, even more remarkable than the Corvette Stingray out front.

I think I remember reading that this wood comes from South America from stumps that are left after logging. But I must reiterate, the fatwood that can be found around here is far different.

Even a small bundle of top quality fatwood will fill any room (or garage) with a strong odor of pinesol and lime. This can actually be problematic.

Slightly(?) off-topic. WDFW recommends using pine sol to keep bears away from garbage cans. Bears do not like the pine smell at all. Been doing this a year and no new issues with bears in my garbage can whereas the neighbors continue to have issues when they do not use it. Time to tape some fatwood to the lid of my garbage can and see if it works. At least a try...

Do you spray it on the outside of the can or what?

I spray pine sol on the outside (3 sides), on the top and inside - one spray in each area the night before garbage pickup. Was thinking if this fatwood is that stinky, it might work...
