Puget Sound

25,687 coho at Sunset Falls as of yesterday’s escapement report.

3,907 summer chum counted on one canal stream as of last weekend when I drove by. Counting should be done for the year.

Those are great numbers for Sunset Falls. Potentially this year's wild coho escapement in the Snohomish could be the largest since the 1/4 million in 2004. Could it be that soon the Snohomish wild coho will not be the limiting stock in PS coho fisheries?

BTW the season final Sunset Falls count in 2020 (parent year for most of this year's return) was only 8,206 adults. The 2021 and 2022 counts were 17,504 and 15,186.

Hopefully those 2021 & 22 numbers bode well for 2024 & 2025.

Since we are communicating about rivers; Sockeye return to Cedar river:

Places to view them provided by Seattle Aquarium:

When I lived on the Cedar in the 70's, sockeye runs were a lot of fun to watch... Take your kids to see them if you can...

I took Nausicaa out to do cutthroat fishing with @jasmillo this morning and it was the best cutty fishing I’ve ever had. We counted 38 hooked in 6hrs of fishing, could have been more if we didn’t leave fish to find fish (kind of a recurring issue we never seem to learn).

IMG_0790.jpegIMG_0794.jpegIMG_0792.jpegIMG_0814.jpeg

Majority of the fish were from a stretch that I was going to pass by but Jason thought it looked fishy, turned out to be a really good call.

IMG_0798.jpegIMG_0816.jpeg

Had multiple double ups, most were medium and small but some really nice fish mixed in. We also lost some fatties as well.

Another perfectly condition day for my little boat out there. I’ve said it before and will say it again, spot lock and autopilot is gold :)

Pretty cool day. Made better by the fact we saw no other boats for the first 4 hours and nobody else targeting SRC. Though we did commit the cardinal sin and leave fish to find fish, it was not a complete waste of time. We explored new water and found some other spots worth exploring in more depth another time. A few more fish from today!

Been out on Hood Canal for a little solo cutthroat hunting. Today I hit 7 beaches, half of them twice. I am finally in the waters that the SRC books speak of with oysters and smelly estuaries everywhere. However, no bites. Yesterday I had pulled over on 101 to check out a beach and saw a bunch of aggressive swirling toilet bowl tiger flush action, but the beach looked pretty private so I drove on. Today I realized that the beach was public and easily accessible, but no action there today. Goddammit!
Tomorrow I’m making my way back home so hoping for some luck on the way.

When hitting a bunch of beaches, do y’all always work it over, or drive on if you see no fish activity from reasonably close?

I’m probably 0 for 20 on searun days. While most of my fishing lately has been on the crummy North Seattle beaches during my kids’ school hours, at this point I’m in serious “gambler’s fallacy” mode. I have plenty of time to contemplate, and I have started to believe that SRC propaganda has been planted to fuel the guiding, publishing and miyawaki popper tying industries. 😼 I could hire a guide, but I believe my day is coming and it is going to be sweet.

I’m sure it’ll catch fish, but that fly would not be my go to as a sea run searching pattern. I would go a little more buggy, jiggy, and muted-colored.

I’m less confident fishing chartreuse for sea runs than I am for coho, others may disagree.

They can be there even if they aren't jumping. If the waters moving I'll fish it. If I planed other beaches I'll bail on it if I don't see or hook anything pretty quick.

It took me a long time to connect with my first SRC. Stick with it and things will pick up. I typically plan my SRC trips around groups of 3-4 beaches. The amount of time I spend on a beach often depends on how much fishy looking water it has when I happen to be there and how long it takes to cover that water the way I want to. For the beaches I feel like I know the best, a very rough estimate would be 45 to 75 minutes depending on how much area there is to cover and of course if the fish are responding. I've found that most of my SRC come on casts parallel to about 45 degrees from shore.

I caught my first SRC on a South Sound beach swinging and stripping a Ferguson's Green and Silver, same colors as your fly but a different style. I caught a few clam shells, a rock with an oyster on it, a few pieces of driftwood, a sculpin too. My first saltwater fish on a fly was a flounder, I could see Bremerton Shipyard from the beach I was fishing, the USS Ajax, AR-7, was tied up in the Yard.

Someone suggested to keep a diary; I wish I had the diligence to do just that.
