What are you listening to?

1969, my cuz called me up in the evening 'gonna be a festival in the east bay tommorrow, let's go, I'll pick you up in an hour." Off we went in his old Triumph ragftop...get there around midnite, settle in 20' from the stage, by morning a sea of folks behind us...was an amazing concert all day with the best vibes until evening when the Hell's Angel got ugly...first they punched out Marty Balin from the Airplane, and an hour later knifed Meredith Hunter to death within yards of us when the Stone started to play...stuck in place, impossible to move six inches, having to watch the savages destroy what had been a sensational event.
until the ugly started, however, no one had put on a better show than Carlos and crew...here's some rare footage of their session at Altamont..their drummer was 15 at the time

Bill Bruford/Tim Garland: Earthworks Underground Orchestra

Earthworks compositions, originally recorded with the four piece band, done up big band style. Outside of bands like Jaga Jazzist, Isildur's Bane, and Gavin Harrison, nobody makes s%*t like this.

I saw this played by Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin on their Love Devotion and Surrender tour also when Carlos and John were introduced they were in full dress whites of the devotional sort. The crowd roared but it seemed out of sync with the display in front of us on stage… a bit into the hooting and hollering some guy screams “Boogie!!!!!” It was funny and just wrong. Did not indulge in any recreational substances but upon leaving I was high floating and a bit euphorial… hell might have been the air quality in the Paramount theater

there's always that guy...saw Buddy Rich play one of his last performances in a SF club, some drunk kept yelling 'play West Side Story'...Buddy stopped playing, stared at the drunk, and said "If I play West Side Story will you shut the fuck up for the rest of the evening?"...the audience cheered
