Puget Sound

You don’t get much of a ROI from RIO when it comes to Puget Sound beach lines.

With all of our complaining about Rio and their (beach) lines (and I'm a member of said club - loved my Coastal Quickshooter but those damn cracks, #crackfest :ROFLMAO:); it seems most of our fly shops stock Rio lines - perhaps more Rio than SA or Airflo or Cortland or.... I wonder what the good folks at Rio have to say about these lines that degenerate so quickly? Rio was good to me when one of their not very old Rio Gold lines broke but I'd much rather not have a line break or crack with very little use.

in my experience they'll happily replace it, and the replacement, and the replacement to the replacement, all the while saying "this is highly unusual--we never hear about this issue.
Exactly what Rio's customer service person said to me when I called about my almost new Rio Gold breaking (I wanted to say "seriously?"). I wonder what goes through their Board at board meetings, if this is even a blip on their radar? One thing seems certain to me, Rio's Reps must be damn good at their trade in fly fishing selling industry given Rio's presence in fly shops.

Yep
When my first Coastal Quickshooter snapped in half, the customer service gal told me “our lines never break”. Funny, because mine just did. So did @Buzzy line and so several others I know.
I was also told by the same customer service rep that professional guides replace their lines every year. How that applies to me, I’m not sure. I kindly told her I’m not a guide, I don’t have a pro deal and I expect $100 lines to last a lot longer than just a few months.
Yes they will continually replace them, but I’d prefer not to go through the hassle.

This has also got me thinking. Do we have a casting tips thread going? I'm curious what videos or tips have really helped folks get line out farther. For example, double hauling was a huge help for me.

First attempt at smoking some fine Puget sound salmon. The top is candied and the bottom is just regular.View attachment 78684
That fish looks great.
I've canned a lot of smoked salmon and In my opinion that salmon is over cooked for canning but perfect for fresh consumptive or freezing.
Ask me how I know.
It will likely have the consistency of shoe leather if you can it.
For canning smoked salmon I get the best results when I lightly smoke it just enough that I can remove the skin before placing in the jars.
In my big chief smoker that is usually one pan of chips or about an hour depending on the thickness of the fillets.
The pressure cooking process will then actually cook the fish and intensify the smoke flavor so that the finished product has a similar appearance and flavor to your fresh smoked product.
I'm not try to tell you what to do but only what I've learned in over 50 years of canning smoked salmon.
You could eat it before you move or vac pac and freeze it then have a friend send it to you packed in dry ice.

After a several year hiatus from beach fishing during the Pink runs I finally made it out to my old beach stomping grounds this morning. After a couple of “WTF?”moments after seeing the crowd on a MONDAY morning I found a spot and got to casting.

Didn’t fish very long but went 1/1 with a small pink that put up a fun fight on the 6wt.

I saw one other fly fisher and he landed a much nicer brighter fish. Lots of folks with gear but I didn’t see any other hookups.

Now this is a sexy set up…. Bauer Rogue 3 on my new Beulah Platinum 9664-4 with a Rio OBS and a pink over white craft fur clouser:

No cracks yet in the Rio line but it’s only been about an hour 🙂

It was good to finally get out again.

Lots of people beach fishing off Lincoln Park Sunday morning.
must have been 100 people and they were catching fish!
fun to see as long as you are out of their casting range - and I was in a boat

There were more than 100 people out there. What is crazy is I think there were even more people out the week before.

It was cool to see the 2 guys fly fishing from paddle boards out there Sunday. Perfect conditions for it, but much braver than me. I would be too afraid to fall in.

It was also fun to see the fly fisher catching fish with their kid on a boat out there. Looked like some good memories there.

Well hot diggity dog, that was fun. I landed about 10 fish today. Hard to keep track after a few. One resi coho and the rest pinks. Oh, one humpy too.

I feel like this morning’s session was kind of the fruition of a fair amount of working on this little boat. So glad I got to use it to fish out there (i.e. it’s open and the boat is running). Only thing is with this set up there really isn’t room for a fishing partner! I strip into one of the big containers and run around looking for fins. Floating line, long leader, heavy fly was the hot set up today. Airflo bass line worked well for this. The 300 grain streamer express was getting under the fish that I was fishing to, I think. Worst part was stopping because of needing to go to work!

The set up:

Seems like that was the last time i smoke fish here till I move 😁 😁 😁. The best part, it included a sneaky photo of the smoker. Glad folks resort to passive agressive emails!

The last word got cut off… what did it say?

just the property name. Wasn't trying to dox myself lol
Oh I see, like the HOA or complex management rules prohibit using a smoker on your property and someone’s trying to scold you. 😱

Exactly. I get it, but I'm still going to be cranky about it.
I would be cranky too… sucks to have to deal with that sort of thing.

This is America dammit, you should be allowed to smoke any meat, any time, anywhere. 😃
