That’s actually not entirely true. The women’s national teams have been deliberately under-televised, under-promoted, etc.
It’s true that that argument has been used to justify paying them less, though, but the same people promoting that argument are the same ones who have been under-promoting the women’s teams. It’s relatively easy to find the men’s teams on tv. Not so the women’s teams, despite the gains made this World Cup.
The Reign, for example, often can’t get televised unless they hit certain viewership/spectator targets, but they can’t hit those targets because they aren’t televised or promoted nearly as much. It’s a catch-22 not built by the players or the fans, but built and propagated by the corporations and organizations that be. Hopefully this year changes that a bit.
