Puget Sound

Pretty smoky sunrise at the "green can" today. A short, unplanned outing motivated by fireworks induced insomnia. Not a lot of bait or birds and little water features at slack high tide, but visibility was excelent as Central Puget Sound was flat as a mirror. Found a herring baitball being harrased by a coho at the surface and somehow the fish connected with the stinger hook of the fly on the second cast. Another rezzie came trolling while looking for bait. The 2-3 lb early season rezzies are growing into the occassional 4 or 4+ lb fish and graduating soon into my late season cooler as some are getting bendy on the mid-size cooler I am using now. Fun outing before work, back at the dock by 7am.View attachment 71498View attachment 71493View attachment 71492

Hypothesis on Sounder Whale behavior....

So a pod of Grey Whales come into Possession Sound each March to do a little time feeding on ghost shrimp, they are fun to see and can be seen from shore,, probably best from Hat Island.

I came across this article today from the Guardian describing how some Grey whales are having their whale lice or cyamids plucked off by some of the whale tour boats when in the Baja...

Maybe digging in the soft sands of Possession sound for the ghost shrimp has a second beneficial effect, specifically helping abrade the cyamids off of the whale?

When I helped harvest a dead gray whale a few years ago, the diver who secured the tail wrap was covered in whale lice. I lost the photos but man they were big and nasty. Nightmare stuff. I cleaned the skiff well that night.

I’d like to offer my thanks to Stonedfish and so many others that pick up the crap left by the downright ignorant on the beaches of the Sound. This pic is of folks about to do the same at Lake Tahoe after the 4th. It really stinks and downright depresses me that so many really do not give a shit about beautiful places. There should be jail time.

As someone who grew up in Scotland and contends with restrictive trespass laws and the right to roam where you see fit, I can only agree with landowners if this is what people do to the land.

Dave,
Thank you for the mention.
I try to do my part as do many others here on this site and elsewhere. I just hate litter. The stuff is everywhere nowadays. That picture is really disgusting that people do that to places they supposedly enjoy.

Totally deserved Brian, I believe you’ve instilled some of the pack it out at the end of the day ethos that many share on this great thread.

Sometimes it’s sort of funny but the stupidity and blind ignorance is beyond infuriating. I mean how can folks do this! I really can’t comprehend it. It’s like WHY??? And I’m being very polite.

People baffle me. I'm with you in not understanding why anyone would think that is ok.

One thing that always shocks and amazes me is how many times people have asked me on ocean trips "Can I just pitch this trash overboard?" I used to give a fairly polite no, but I kinda did away with the politeness over the years. I mean why in the hell would just pitching trash into the ocean even enter someone's mind? At this point it truly just offends me. No, it's NOT ok. Just absolutely blows my mind that some people have that attitude.

Thank you for your efforts!!!

It has always baffled me that folks can pack in there crap but seem incapable of packing out the empties and leftovers, which are much lighter and less space consuming by the way.

What's equally amazing from the photo is apparently no one said the the group next to them, "hey, could you pack your garbage out please?" of if they did, they were few and between and no one listened.

Again, thanks to all those who pick up after themselves and the thoughtless others who don't.

This kind of behavior by “mankind” is, at least to me, a sad statement of where far too many of our fellow human beings are anymore. They just don’t care about anything or anyone except themselves.

Others have mentioned the excellent coho fishing In MA 10.
Nearly 450 coho harvested between Armeni, Shilshole and Everett yesterday.

Geez. From what I saw out there yesterday that's just under 1 fish per boat lol.

Between the nice weather, coho fishing, and crabbing, areas 9 and 10 were quite busy yesterday. Quite the contrast from Friday where it was a ghost town.

No fish checker at Kingston when I got back to the dock in the early afternoon. Parking lot was full enough that another truck and trailer waited for me to pull out to snag my spot. Was kinda surprised to find no fish checker.

That is surprising there is no checker at Kingston.
Yep, just over a fish per angler for those three locations. I think with the participation level and knowledge of the folks fishing there is some feast or famine related to the creel reports when it comes to catches per boat / angler. I’ve read some reports of people really struggling out there to catch coho versus having the type of day you and @Irafly had.
They also reported eight pinks being caught at PA on 7/8. 😳

Yep I totally agree. We talked to several boats yesterday who, while they had caught some fish, were not exactly lighting it up either. With the easy entry to this type of fishery it encourages people of all experience/ability level and it definitely creates that feast/famine scenario.

Spent a super fun day on the soundwith @Northern

Less than stellar fly fishing conditions most of the day but we still were able to find some good action and make a day out of it.

Started off super slow until about 7 or so when we spotted a big bird bang in shallow, ran in and found just an absurd amount of herring. And the fish were on em. I started off with 3 fish in three casts which was pretty rad, then it was fairly constant action as we chased the bait around. As usual the coho were able to avoid coming to the net more often than we'd prefer, but such is coho fishing.

That finally petered out and then spent the next several hours cruising all over area 10 looking for signs of life, but didn't find much but a few missed grabs and follows. Close to 3, just when we were thinking about calling it a day, we found some pretty crazy action in 75-125' of water. I saw a fish crash through some bait so we zipped over there and then there was nothing. No bait, no rips, nothing. But within a few minutes we started seeing fish follow our flies. Lots of fish. Then things got super busy until almost 5 when we both decided we were out of steam and called it a day. That was awfully fun fishing. We hooked a decent number of fish right next to the boat as there was pods between 4 to maybe 20 fish chasing flies which seemed to make them a bit more aggressive. Northern even hooked one on a popper during this period.

Pretty weak tides today and it was so bright and flat calm out, but sure is cool to still be able to find some decent fishing. Incredibly beautiful day on the sound but would have paid money for some cloud cover.

Nice!
What size herring are you guys seeing?
The little dudes that we sometimes see lots of in July or bigger ones?

It's been a bit of a mix but I haven't seen a ton of those little firecracker herring. Seen some schools of significantly larger ones but I'd say most of what we are saying are in the green label range.

Starting to see some significantly larger fish. Wasn't able to put any of those into the net today but had our chances. We didn't keep any fish today but I would have likely bonked one of those larger ones out of curiosity to get a better look. Might be some ocean fish trickling in.

Also had about a 7 lb fish jump feet from the boat while I was running. I immediately stopped and that fish hit the water and literally just came to a stop and sat there a foot under the surface. Did not look like a coho at all, in size, general appearance, and the way it jumped and behaved. After thinking about it I wonder if it was a sockeye. I know the All Rivers boat got one on a naked herring fished on a flat line about this time of year two seasons ago.
