Lost and found?

I see, or rather I don't see a lost and found forum.
Yesterday I lost a Sage 8136-4 Demo with a Young's plate wind reel attached to it. The reel had a red Simms reel cover over it and the setup had a blue fabric rod sock on it. This was lost on the upper Sauk float when my raft flipped and sent me swimming. That's the short version. The long version is it took me about 18 seconds to swim to shore.

I can no longer access the other site, but I would appreciate it if someone could spread the word.

I can if you’d like, what river and approximate location?

Glad your ok Wayne!
Was it that sweeper in the upper 3rd?

Yup. That single log poking out. It's very deep under there. Never did touch bottom. My first thought after going in was "It's not as cold as I thought it would be."

A pair of great guys in a blue raft managed to yank my boat free and retrieve a couple of rods, my gear bag and an oar in the eddy down below. Couldn't thank them enough. All I lost was one oar, a thermos full of hot coffee, the rod, and a wading staff.

Geez, glad you are OK. I remember looking a that thing on Monday and discussing how dangerous it was. Hope you get your rod back, but really glad that you escaped safely.

Along that line, we all know the rivers are about to change with the runoff. I'm wondering if there's a way to put together a simple, updatable map of frequently floated rivers to identify new hazards as they appear and warn folks. I suppose that would be a lot of work for someone, but sure would be a great public service. It might be a good eagle scout project, or something like that.

Damn Wayne . . . glad you're OK! Hope you had a spare oar with you and Good Luck tracking that rod down. If I hear anything I'll let you know.

Sounds like we do need a Lost and Found forum - just heard from another friend on FB that a spey rod and case was found along the highway on that stretch of river.

If that was yours, contact the State Patrol.

Scary shit for sure, glad it worked out for you.

Did you tell your wife yet?

Wayne,
Glad you are ok!

Really glad you made it to safety Wayne, even if the gear is gone. I was swiftwater S&R'd back in '05 and have no plans to relive.

I know we talked about a lost 'n found here but, if I remember, the preference was to keep it in better sight on the main forum.

No case with mine. But I'll call them. Thanks!

Oh yea. She laughed. Only because she has no idea how bad some of those sweepers can be. As sweepers go that is probably the most benign because it's at the end of the jam and there is no more wood below it. I know because I inspected it personally from under water. :)

It's cool to survey the rocks under the boat but there are times when you need to watch where you're going.

Sounds like somebody was wearing their PFD! Glad it was just an expensive reminder and not something worse. Good on the other boat helping you out.

Last summer, first float on the Klick, I stopped on the road way above the canyon section to take a look. Just then 3 guys in a paddle raft high centered a strainer and flipped. They all got out but the boat just kept going. Last glimpse I saw of it was about 2 miles below them and it was still just cruising along. I floated down to that spot that evening and called out for them but no response. Didn't see them or the boat the next day and I don't think anybody floated past me. Guess they found the boat eventually. That's some tough hiking in a wetsuit and neoprene booties...

Figured it wasn't yours Wayne- unless it sprouted legs and was out on the highway (north of Marsh Rd) trying to hitch a ride.

Some of us wear our PFDs, some don't. I always wear mine now in 'serious' water like the upper Sauk, anywhere on the Calawah or Sol Duc, etc.

If you choose not to wear the PFD, at least buckle you wading belt tight. It traps air and acts as floatation and delays your waders filling with water (not a good thing) so you have time to get your bearings and hopefully get to shore.

Totally selfish announcement, as I don't want to repeat Thomas' experience and be the one to find your dead ass in a logjam. ;)
