We're all griping about the Nooksack being closed or the Skagit C&R season being shorter than it should be. But what about this 65 minute Black Lake sturgeon fishing season in Michigan?

It’s not the only lake sturgeon season in Michigan, but it is the shortest.

With a total catch limit of six fish, the Black Lake sturgeon season lasted just 35 minutes on Saturday morning, Feb. 5, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. It started at 8 a.m., and anglers were packing up their gear by 8:36 a.m. after 11-year-old Andrew Maltby caught the sixth fish to close out the season.....

But hey, that's still an improvement over the 2022 season, which lasted only 35 minutes.
 
Some of the sturgeon opener days in the lower Columbia are only for a few hours, so we have similar things here.

Yeah, but there are multiple days each season, right? So it's at least better than a "one shot, one hour" type thing, right?

Not according to the guys who partake in the fishery. They're very vocal about it being an overreach of government, etc etc.

Well I admit, I know literally nothing about sturgeon fishing. I just googled and saw articles like this talking about multiple days:

It's hard for me to understand why they would open a fishery with an acceptable harvest rate of only 6 fish. As much as I want to fish UC tribs for steelhead again, I don't think I'd go if the excess fish numbered less than a few hundred.

I have never seen an old sofa jump out of the water, but I suppose it could happen. Some of the sofas I saw in student houses in the 80’s looked like they might get up and run away…
