Few days ago was on the river by myself, working the same 20 yard section up and down, had my nymph rod propped against a rock at the 'bottom', was back at the 'top', sitting on low bank while I changed flies. As I start to wade back out, see fly lines flicking out, a guy and a gal are now casting from where my rod had been parked. I climb out of the river, park my dry rod, go get my nymph rod which is now leaning against a tree, say hello to the couple, guy just gives me a nod, woman ignores me. I depart for another section of river.

Show up yesterday, three old guys like myself working the prime water, so I enter the water and start working upstream of them.
The guy nearest to me, maybe 20 yards downstream and up on the bank in a prime casting position with open space behind him for backcasting, yells 'hey, I don't know if there's any fish in front of you, bunch right here in front of me, come on over."
I thank him, close about half the distance, he says "keep coming, just get right next to me, you'll never reach them from there.'

Some folks would make for fine neighbors, others not so much...

I have watched others fish near me. I see they are not very successful, albeit technique or fly selection.

I have reached out and try to strike up a conversation sometimes. Some are friendly and accept a fly or some advice, others not so much or not at all.

You just never know...

Many of us have watched or met some real characters when fishing. Glad I got to see them and looked forward to seeing them again.

Some of us have met famous people while fly fishing. I was on the Met and a local QB was fishing the same stretch of the river. I learned more from him about how to fish it.

You just never know who you see/meet when fishing.

Was passing thru Tennessee one year enroute to see my parents. At a rest stop I had the hood up on my XR7 and was checking fluids. A yellow drop top caddy pulls in next to me and an older couple gets out.

The guy stops and strikes up a conversation. Turns out he's quite the car buff. I turn around to face him and stop speechless. He sticks out his hand and says " Hi I'm Don Ameche".

Did he fish with an indicator? Man made or all natural?

😉

my fave was meeting Clint Eastwood (who owned the 1,000 acre Rising River Ranch at the time) at a little country store just outside of Fall River Mills when we stopped for after fishing beers. Clint was with a couple of locals on the front porch benches drinking beers, we ended up standing around drinking ours, talking about the current Hexagenia hatch on Fall River for a bit, then after finishing his beer he got in his 50's Chevy truck and drove off.
Fall River remains among my fave rivers I've ever been on.
As to Rick's Lodge back in the day...lol
