Speaking of med students, just hosted one this past week who used to guide in Ketchum. She ended up matching in Internal Med yesterday. It was really fun talking with her, so meaning because UW has an agreement with Idaho, Montana, Alaska and Wyoming to act as in-state medical school, you get kids from all over the PNW. All walks of life too. 95% of the time it's a solid and consistently interesting group of people. Most of them don't fish or have a relative that might. Sometimes they flyfish and when they do it is fun talking about their home water. She was on a whole nother level in terms of place, runoff, flies, roads, target fish etc. She woulda had no problem throwing some stitches in your TJ and talking non BS fish talk the whole time to keep your anxiety down a notch.Slightly off topic, but the last time I needed stitches, the clinic was manned by nothing but med students. None had ever done stitches, and the only doctor in house that knew how was busy. So I had them give me a shot of lydacaine, and with six med students watching over my shoulder, I did it myself. The doctor, an older British lady, came in just as I was finishing. She couldn't believe it, and asked where I learned. She wasn't expecting me to answer fly tying.Oh, and there isn't even a visible scar.
Oh my gosh, I had planned to reply to this weeks ago and just forgot. To read of the excitement of getting a MIddle Fork Permit brings back memories of my first float on that river back in 1974. I was a second year med student at the time and managed to get summer off that year to run the Jarbridge/Bruneau, Selway and Middle Fork of the Salmon. We used Avon Redshanks, no rowing frame, relied on surplus rubberized canvas river bags, 7 foot oars, and we bailed out our rafts with 5 gallon pickle buckets. Low tech for sure. I was lucky enough to repeat the Middle Fork trip in 1976 and 1978. I recall a fellow named Bill Parks who was floating the Middle Fork and selling river gear to folks, handing out equipment brochures, etc. Of course his company became NRS, something that none of us foresaw at the time. I got out of the rafting adventures in around 1980 but bought a couple of Kleppers around 1990 and used those to float the Noatak and Alagnak, big time adventures back then for sure. Finally sold the Kleppers last summer. Definitely make your opportunities when you are young and healthy. Before I retired at age 54 one of my retired patients in the ER told me retirement was the hardest job he ever had. Retire early, work later if you have to and congratulations on the Middle Fork permit. I thought I had saved my river map from one of my trips that I was going to send to you but alas it seems to have disappeared.I hear you. There are just so many amazing trips and destinations! It’s about prioritizing, I guess. I have a bunch of other trips that don’t require permits that I will be scheduling now that I have the dates of the permits. For instance, I want to packraft the SF Flathead; I’d love to do an Alaskan river like the Alagnak or preferably one that is less traveled; the Elk is high on the list… there are lots more on the list.
My biggest problem is finding people to go! I have no problem with doing any of these rivers myself but my friends and family seem to think that is a dumb idea, LOL!
And, once I add in fishing with Ive and other friends, along with camping with my sister and her family, my calendar is getting filled so I need to start prioritizing things. But I am a firm believer in doing what you can, while you can as none of us are guaranteed any tomorrows.
