Why do you fly fish?

It's the only thing I have any talent for. No zen, no peace, no getting away from the rest of the world, no search for meaning, no spiritual meaning.. none of that. It's just me doing and sharing the only thing I can do well. And it's fun.

This struck me as funny, because one of the reasons I fly fish is specifically because I kinda suck at it. It's a real challenge for me that I've mostly taught myself, and that frustration and struggle is the appeal to me over gear fishing. And like you said, it's fun!

That's what big game hunting is for me. Challenging, frustrating but oddly exhilarating. I've been hunting 6 seasons. Seen one animal i wanted to shoot but I missed.

Uh, .........Because the voices in my head tell me to....?

I fly fish because I love the fact it takes me away either locally for a few hours or thankfully to some beautiful places in the world. Everyone you might meet at a lake or a lodge or show etc all are there to share a common ground and enjoy the same common interest. For just that short time, it brings all of us together and onto the same playing field regardless of background, career choice, socioeconomic status etc.

Dad had me fishing from the start on one of the beautiful Finger Lakes of Western NY, so fishing is in my genes. I also love wondering in the woods around our house and was fascinated with the critters living in the creek. I had a neighbor who would talk to me about fly fishing. He would always have an Orvis bamboo rod in his trunk and sneek away during the day for fishing the many streams in the area. While recovering from another broken leg from my skiing exploits, my sister bought me a cheap fly tying kit. That is when it clicked for me. I realized that fly fishing was more emersive than any other kind of fishing. That is what drew me into a life-long obsession with our sport. To be a successful fly fisherman you need to understand so many variables about the fish, their environment, weather, everything. I don't know how you could take a casual approach to our sport or that is just me.
