What's in your vise?

Name: The Usual

Hook: Kamasan B170, size 14
Thread: Veevus 8/0, fluorescent green. The original uses hot orange thread but I changed it up. The thread color shows through when wet.
Tail: natural snowshoe foot
Abdomen: natural snowshoe foot
Wing: natural snowshoe foot

Source: Fran Betters pattern

I have probably fished Usuals more than any other pattern. Total confidence fly for me.
I knew someone who dyed that stuff into a plethora of colors, and tied that fly to match, with great success, numerous hatching mayflies. So long ago, I can't remember who it was.

That one pops up now and again and I keep thinking I should try it.
You should! There's a trick, clean out and tie the wing in first, wrapping tightly toward the rear. After 4 wraps, trim the wing butts at an angle. That creates the body taper. Then tie in the tail, and use all the bits of snowshoe lying around to dub the thread for the abdomen. Finish with a few turns of dubbed thread in front of the wing to prop it up. The fly takes floatant well and also works wet.
