This one could stand to be a touch sparser and grayer or browner on top as well, but it works. These are the right size and translucency to match young of the year shad in the Columbia or dace in some of the lakes.

Tail: a mix of light-colored flash- light brite fibers or similar. In this case pearl and silver mixed.
Body: material from the tail twisted and wrapped up the bead
Bead: 3 mm brass or tungsten as you like

Throat, back, head: bruiser bland or equivalent
Eyes: 3/32" flat silver and black

Caribou makes for nice heads on smaller flies; a bit unruly but it spins, packs and trims very well. Only issue I’ve had has been dyeing; its very dense and has a lot of underfur )I need to find a way to extend time in the dye bath without over-cooking it and ruining the texture).

hook - WFC Model 3 #10
thread - SemperFli 8/0 brown
tail - caribou hair
rib - small wire gold
body - dubbing hare’s ear
hackle - Cree

My version of a swimming articulated nymph for carp. It's essentially a mix of Chase Smith's Articulated Damsel and Bob Clouser's Swimming Nymph. Long story short, I discovered that the really cool fly my buddy gave me a couple years ago, that has caught carp pretty much every time I've used it, is a Chase Smith Articulated Damsel. He ties it for carp. He ties it in olive, golden brown, craw (rust) and black. I wanted something really drab natural brown for those super bright days in clear water.
So thanks for the inspiration Chase! And Bob!

#8 Fulling Mill Bonio Carp hook (FM25 00)
3.8mm black bead chain eyes
Light brown rabbit for body
Brown 2mm sheet foam on top of brown, very webby, hen saddle
Shank is brighter brown marabou and brown foam wrapped on a #10 Mustad 94840 dry fly hook with hook bend cut off.
Essentially a home-grown wiggle shank. That shank is attached using a loop of 8# Maxima Chameleon, that I never use.
This allows the tail to float up when the fly is sitting on the bottom. Great action when stripped as well.
Trim the hen saddle so the fly sits flat. And slap some Zap a Gap on the foam for appearance and to toughen it up.

It won't win any beauty contests, but I think it's the good kind of ugly.

Saw this winging technique here. As advertised, it may not look great on a show fly, but since I don’t usually tie for show and I’m in the mood to wing one for fishing, it seems to work well enough using the abundant supply of hen back and saddle feathers I have.
