One of the times where my wife was the most angry with me was a late evening on Hat Creek where I was headed back to the car and bumped into bamboo rod maker and fisherman extraordinaire, James Reams who "made" me turn around a follow him. He handed me one of his rods, which had a little ant pattern on it and told me that if I wanted to really get the fish's attention during the trico spinner fall that was occurring is that you've gotta un-match the hatch. Ever since then, I've always had a few ant and beetle patterns in my trout box. Shoot, either of those sunken (or weighted and nymphed) is killer too...shhhhhhh.

The reason wifey was so angry was that I told her I'd be back by around 6pm. I made it back to the car by around 10pm....surprised she didn't just leave.
Our big un-match the hatch a-ha moment came at Hot Creek.......big fish sipping tiny midges....denial, after denial. Foam beetle🪲 was the ticket. Foam beetles slayed on Baum Lake too.

Luckily, my wife was not waiting in the car either time!
