What's in your vise?

Cool fly! What's going on with the dark ribbing? It looks like two wraps at the bend, then it disappears, then a wrap near the post. I can't get my head around it.

I see more wraps near the post as well.
Looks to be some sort of quill or hair that is black white black. Or, some sort of black base material with a white biot over top.

A month or so ago I stumbled on a flash material marketed as "Crystal Hair". It was unbranded and looked like it was suitable for some saltwater flats flies I was working on. It is super translucent, compresses nicely, takes markers and UV resin very well. Comes in a nice variety of colors. I started messing around with it and figured out it was pretty useful for the Thunder Creek Minnow style. These will tested out this Spring as the fry start showing up in our rivers. The one attribute I find very appealing is the translucence that will reveal the thread color underneath while maintaining some of the material color. Using red thread on the Thunder Creek style makes for some interesting heads.P3250456.JPG

I believe it’s a fly tyers dungeon product.

It might be but I got it off an EBAY seller that appears to offer more colors that you find on the FTD site.

Small for Spring...a little over 7" with all the junk under the trunk. Sorry, didn't really fully preen it out for the camera...😆

@jasmillo .....your chum fry are bitchin. Ever tie up a whitefish fry pattern? I've always thought it'd be worth trying to match on rivers that have large population of whities like the D. I suppose your chum pattern, or an olive clouser would work.....fun to tweak on.
