What's in your vise?

I use the ones from Fish Skull. With the heavy heads, the hooks tend to get dull on the rocks. My solution is to tie them on micro tubes so that the hook can be easily changed. I tie them in olive and tan. Both of these were fished Tuesday on the Yakima River with some success. I donated a box of these and other trout Spey flies to the Deschutes River Alliance Annual Auction which will be the last weekend in February.

The green one is what they look like when you pull them out of the water wet, but the rabbit flows nice and full in the current.

Oh boy, something new to investigate. I too have noticed that standard style hooks need to sharpened often, and I loose more flies in the water than in the trees with standard vs. jig hooks.

The Fish Skull sculpin heads are heavily weighted on the bottom, to make the hook ride point up if you want it to. I'd start with the smallest size.

I don't know that these will be any better than a muddler, I found those so good last summer/fall. And in those seasons I'm sure it's more than just a sculpin pattern. But it's fun to be at the point of "I can catch a fish, what else can I come up with". I'm getting antsy to get back out and try some of this stuff before I get a big buildup. I want my car back, but I know my backs doing good with the break and rehab.

Sculpin move skittishly along the bottom in my experience. They will rest/hide very still, then dart to another location and rest there. These sculpin helmets help mimic that, because the head is heavy enough to hold onto the bottom and you can move the fly along the bottom from hiding place to hiding place. That said, I've had a lot better luck with muddlers than with these sculpins.

A blast from the past. These killed it for me on Soda Butte Creek back in the day (early 2000’s) when you could find space to stretch out and have some fun; those days are few and far between but the fly still works. They float, they’re visible and simple enough to tie that you won’t be afraid to cast them into the tightest spots where the trout live, and won’t risk drowning to retrieve one if it gets hung up. Here’s his SBS if you’re interested; change color/size to meet your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 730 #6
thread - Uni 6/0 tan
butt/shellback/head - 2mm foam tan
rib - tying thread (doubled)
body - dubbing tan
wing - deer hair
legs - medium rubber brown
indicator - 1mm foam orange

Regards,
Scott
