I started tying this fly for Pass Lake in 2006. I was looking for something that would resemble a few things in general but nothing in particular. Since then, this fly has caught tons of searuns, steelhead, bull trout, and smallmouth, along with the trout in Pass. It is my number one trout streamer and has caught more lake fish than anything else. It worked so well the first time I took it out that I daydreamed of putting it in a Pez dispenser. Hence the name.

It works well in wooded environments because it takes advantage of the 200R's tendency to ride upside down. I help it along by clipping the hackle and tying in the tail on the "wrong" side of the shank. In size 8 and #8 test line you can pull it right off the wood, straighten the hook, and get beck to fishing in seconds. My favorite color is olive brown, olive grizzly for hackle and a piece of red micro chenille. Counter rib it with something because the body is the left over marabou from the tail twisted a little and wrapped like chenille.

It’s quite possible the olive WB (which is essentially what these are, with a few tweaks) is the most versatile and effective fly in the universe. Definitely one of my favs for just about anything, anywhere, and at any time. Your presentation is very fishy for sure. Love it.

more fun with snowrunner. A pretty generic snowrunner streamer for bull trout. trying the free-flowing hook in there. I'm still undecided on eyes. I'll probably add them at some point, but eyes have never been a make or break for me with big predator flies.

There's a lot of layering that went into this one. bucktail (obvi), snowrunner tail, flash, more bucktail, SF tied in reverse, a couple of saddles to break it up and of course, titan dubbed head.

Nice fly…looks great. I’m not familiar with this fly style but I think a micro version of this could be deadly for trout in lakes. I’d see it replacing my simple marabou leech patterns pretty quick.

(Edit: I also literally can’t remember the last time I fished a lake…but you know, if I did, this would be my game plan.)

I don't know how "micro" you could go with bucktail (or snowrunner for that matter), but I've never tried. Honestly though, I think that's where marabou really really shines....those tiny patterns that you need (or want) a ton of movement. another option though, would be icelandic sheep. it's got great movement for larger flies (I don't go too large as it soaks up the water) and would for smaller flies as well.

Challenge accepted! Haha. I’ll need to check this stuff out next time I’m at the fly shop.

Not in my vise yet, but I just got some new hooks so I thought I’d share a comparison. Hooks are Firehole Sticks 811 and 860. Really interesting hook bend on both and quite sharp. The hook gape is huge! It’s sometimes tough to know what size to get so hopefully this comparison is helpful for someone.
