They're a band from Austin,TX. I would say most popular between the early 80s through the late 90s. It's tough to pin a genre on them though. They have a unique sound all their own. I've heard them labeled as "punk rock", but would say that's highly inaccurate. The name came from a gig they played and the guy that introduced them just read their set list with a song titled "Butthole Surfer" at the top of the list. They went with that from then on.

I was lucky to see the Butthole Surfers several times in small clubs in the 80s, with lineups that included 2 drummers, a wild dancer, film, smoke, strobes, flaming cymbals, and other low budget effects. Controlled chaos. Mind blowing.

Though weird performers, they were quite normal offstage in regular conversation, except Paul (guitar) who never seemed to unweird.
