What are you listening to?

Just picked up the latest Grateful Dead Dick’s Pick to go to vinyl, the 1973 Midwest concert tour kick-off concert at the Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City. My pocketbook is meaningfully lighter but my ears are happy. Never really know what you’re going to get with a Grateful Dead concert recording but this is a good one.

I have listened to jazz since the 40's and still haven't heard everyone but can often tell who is singing just by hearing a few notes. On my truck the Sinatra channel plays almost all of the jazz singers that have performed since the early part of the 20th century. The jazz channel on Sirius plays a vast cross section jazz also and my TV has both a jazz vocal and mostly jazz instrumental channels. When I travel I play a game where I try to identify the singer, the band or the song. The same at home on the TV, I try to identify the artist before looking to see who it is if there is any doubt. I don't guess right all the time of course but give myself extra points for identifying more obscure artist and am really tickled when I correctly name someone that is little known. Rarely I will hear Dakota Staton and maybe Keely Smith or Lena Horne and always guess right. The same with Carmen McRae. But some women's voices are so similar that it is nearly impossible to tell them apart so you have to be familiar with a particular song or inflection to identify. And some have unique voices that are impossible to mistake like Billie Holiday or Eartha Kitt.

This week I had a real victory by naming an extremely obscure vocalist after only a couple of words. The name will not be familiar to most of you but the artist was Blossom Dearie. I get extra points for identifying an almost unheard of jazz singer!

On KBRD last night, had me tappin' my toes fixin' dinner.

We live in a rich music area. Heard Beth Hart at the Portland Jazz Festival, and
B.B King, Kenny Wayne Sheppard and Joe Bonamassa in 2005 at Maryhill Winery,. Hopefully Maryhill will return to hosting some great shows.

In the mood for some good vocals - this lady sure was a wonderful singer:

So great that it nows me when others try and cover it or for that matter release their own versions…feel the same way about Grace slick and anyone foolish enough or with enough gall to cover her on the Jefferson Airplanes “Volunteers” album- “Somebody to Love”

Etta James released an album "Mystery Lady" - songs of Billie Holiday. Etta's band for that album is so tight and she was so perfect for the recordings. Amazing album and one of my favorite albums of all time; there isn't a bad track on the album. One of my favorites:
