I grew up in Iowa and my parents didn’t have a lot of money, so their starter house didn’t have a basement. Whenever the tornado sirens sounded, my mom would herd us over to the neighbors, who had a basement.
There we’d be glued to the local AM radio station waiting for updates on where the funnel clouds were.
In between updates, I think our local station only had one music tape they’d throw in before heading for the basement themselves. It was always the same set of tunes…and, therefore, became Tornado songs for me. Now, whenever I hear one, no matter where I am, I’m immediately taken back to the O’Brien’s basement
