SFR Weather Station Suggestions?

Sorta fishing-related

Marking this SFR because I base a lot of my fishing decisions on weather apps/websites.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice, but not crazy expensive, weather station? I'd like to put one up at my house. Ideally, it'd have a LCD display I could look at for current conditions, but also sync with my computer so I could see historical data. I'd also like to be able to sign up with Windy or Weather Underground or whoever to be a "local station".

Would probably be mounted onto my house up at the roof peak. But it could be pole mounted if necessary.

I'm vaguely surprised to only get two suggestions. I would have thought there were more weather nerds around here.

I’ll be watching this, because I’ve wanted one for a long time.

Earlier this year i replaced a fancy but no longer functioning station with a basic Lacrosse 308-11425Bv2. Its nice big color display tells me what i need to know.
It does NOT sync to a computer

I generally look out the window.
You could just call me. I'll tell you if it's raining or not. If it is raining I'll dig into my bag of 87 different types of rain slips to describe it to you.

have had several at different houses (we're gypsies), the La Crosse was the best of the lot.
whatever unit you buy, best to mount the outside unit where you can easily service and clean the dirt and insect accumulation that happens.

I mean, I get it.

But I grew up watching a very cool old brass nautical-style anemometer. I have great memories of it as a kid and it has left me with a permanent interest in knowing how hard the wind is blowing.

Interesting note, looks like those brass anemometers run $4-600 these days:

Here’s what I have:

It’s a Davis Vantage Pro2, about 15 years old. I got it when I lived at my previous place because it had an anemometer for wind speeds and we got some crazy wind in Black Diamond.

I’ve never tried to put it online but I think it has that capability if you buy the data logger component that plugs into the back.

I’m pretty happy with it, I think the Davis brand is supposed to be real high quality. (It does have a ton of features that I don’t even use.)

Good luck and let us know what you get!

Andy

I had a weather station for awhile back in the early days of digital. It failed in about a year and half.

My two cent, Josh, is what's happening in my yard isn't representative of where I intend to fish....so I look online using the National Weather Service, the Windy App and whatever online cameras I can find....but that's me and my circumstances.

For example, I live about 1.5 miles from the bay but my neighborhood is wind protected so I won't feel or see what the wind gusts are doing on the beach. I've also found the winds will be different at Squalicum or Fazon and especially if I'm considering heading down to Skagit County...so I look to the web.

That said, I couldn't resist passing this option along...they're relatively simple to use but it could be a bugger to get up the on the roof....

i just have the simple Acurite desk model. The sensor sits on top of a 5-foot length of pvc pipe. That is zip tied to a post that is between the rental units. Just shows wind speed, temperature, humidity and barometer readings. Also, indoor temp and humidity. Also have the Accuweather app on the desktop with 10-day prediction. Good enough for me...

A company that imports inexpensive radio gear has these weather stations too.

of all the weather info, when living in a rainy climate watching rain totals add up becomes a real thing.
One seriously stormy and extended winter on the OR coast, where the average rainfall is 76", we reached 109" of rain...after that winter, even the mold had mold on it..

BINGO!

I certainly don't use my Ambient weather station as some sort of predictive guide for distant outdoor trips. I've always found weather science interesting in and of itself. We live on the edge of a bluff several hundred feet above the Spokane River canyon, which provides plenty of local geographical impact upon weather at our location. I've recorded SW wind gusts well in excess of 50 mph many times.

I always enjoy reading Cliff Mass' weather blog postings, which are not necessarily focused on prediction but rather about modeling and why PNW weather is occurring on a macro basis. Fascinating stuff!
