WDFW Digital license

Just got an email from WDFW stating the usual waterproof, tear resistant (although not fade resistant at least in my experience) license paper is going away as early as May 13th. An earlier news release had a July 8th as the last day, they say a global shortage of petroleum based paper is responsible for the earlier day. So if you want your last shot at it better hurry up! From then on only digital or print your own license at home or at a dealer on regular paper. Rollout issues of the digital version remain, such as problems printing the vehicle acces, issues with login verification, catch record card functionality and others. An update shortly after release solved some problems some remain. Good luck! News release below:

I'm exited for my first encounter with WDFW law enforcement! Once I got the license I removed the password option on my phone. This renders the app useless. Why did I do it? It slows down the process of getting the camera going on my phone. Not putting up with that.

When the LEO and I meet up he's going to have to wait for me to go to settings and password protect my phone. Those of you old enough probably remember Tim Conway on the old Carol Burnett show. Specifically the character of the old guy with messed up gray hair that shuffled his feet a couple inches at a time and fucked up everything he touched - very slooowly. That will be me...
FYI:
If you have an Android (or maybe only Samsung?) and you want to keep your phone locked but keep quick access to the camera:

Settings> Advanced features> Side Button
Click on the box, choose camera

Even if your screen is locked, clicking the side button twice in quick succession will open the camera. (If you try to do anything else from there, it's still locked)

Hope that helps!

Going digital. In Wa/Or/Mt. so nice. 👍

I screen shot and send to notes on iPhone. Plus keep in email folder. Never cared for the waterproof catch card/license. Keeping a pen on you and hoping it didn’t leak was always in the back of my mind after an ink leak incident in one of my packs.

I went electronic this year... the app is sub par. The inability to change your mind and go to paper is absolutely ridiculous.

If I lose my phone while fishing or if my battery dies I will keep fishing or hunting and will not pay any associated fines.

Interestingly, i got an email today about my truck license plates. First time ever.
Makes me think no longer getting a notice in the mail.
Cost savings

@Rob Allen I believe it is the same in Oregon. Once you make your choice for the year and purchase the license, you have to wait until the next year to make the change.

I opted for the digital license when I first heard about it, but never purchased it. I went into HQ and asked for them to make the change to back to paper and then purchased my license.

I had thought that they discontinued mailing notices, but I double-checked to be sure before replying. Looks like letters have been discontinued, but you may get an email or postcard. I cannot remember the last time I got a letter in the mail telling me it was time to renew my vehicle, boat or trailer registration.

Just got off a 7 day JD float. About halfway through my phone fell out of my front pocket getting out of the boat. It was about 4' deep with about 1' of viso. There goes not only my fishing license and boat tag but also my river permit(they stopped paper permits at the put in this year). Fortunately I was able to feel around with my feet and find it and it was still alive.

A digital option is great, but for the love of god just let me print my own paper if I want to. Those crazy fukrs over at Ziplock are on to something...

So has anyone heard what they are gonna do if they dont have the paper to print game tags that need to be attached to the animal after harvest.

Glad you got your phone back Yard!
If I may, I'd suggest an IP68 waterproof phone pouch, or if you want to take pictures, a form fitted case; $20 to $50. They either come with or have an anchor point that will accept 20lb backing or braid to connect to a neck lanyard that will keep it at your fingertips and prevent loss. Tucked into a pocket, into a shirt, or under a pfd it won't be a bother.

A case's stick-on fingerprint feature may be quirky or quit working but I just press the power button once, quick swipe, and enter my 4 digit PIN. Takes less than 5 seconds, works every time.

Also keeping the phone in airplane mode when in poor or no cell coverage will still allow GPS for navigation and WIFI and BT for connecting devices but stops the heavy cell radio battery drain

And for around $20 to $40+ a lightweight pocket sized power bank in a dry bag or pouch will charge your phone 2+ times if you are using it for pics and navigation.

Good practical advice for all of us, thanks!

PS. remember just because my license is digital, doesn't mean I can't also print it out. I just make multiple copies, put them in ziplocs, and stash them in my armada of water craft and vest.

PPS. Mr. Sale, you must have Houdini toes! :giggle:

Maybe they’ll come up with something like those bands they put around your wrist during medical procedures. There doesn’t seem to be any shortage of those. I’ve had four attached to me in the past three months and I don't have antlers. 😂

I've had four of them as well!! Not a contest we want to win though! Cheers! Stay healthy!

Looks like there won’t be a choice in 2 weeks

You should have the option to print one at home and have it be valid. There is no legit reason not to be able to. . To me it reeks of authoritarianism. Like guys are sitting in Olympia making up hoops for people to jump though because they think it's fun to make us jump.
