Here’s a chance to give back to the resource many of us enjoy on a regular basis.
I got the information from Costal Conservation Association (CCA. CCA Washington recently donated $10,000 for this program). If you are not familiar with CCA they are worth checking out. I helped with an oyster planting event at Penrose State Park years ago. CCA also helped sponsor that event.
If you are interested in helping out and/or need more information.. send an e-mail to info@ccawashington.org.

Summary: Help Puget Sound Restoration Fund (PSRF) staff:
1) process incoming wild Olympia oysters, and
2) load shell bags at the Kenneth K. Chew Center for Shellfish Research and Restoration (Chew Center).
Oyster Processing: These oysters will be collected from Fidalgo Bay the night before and brought to the hatchery to be used as broodstock, where they are spawned and their progeny are reared for outplant in support of our restoration projects. Before the animals can be transferred into seawater systems at the Chew Center, they must first be individually inspected and cleaned to ensure no aquatic pests are brought with them. Volunteers will assist PSRF staff by removing epibionts (e.g., barnacles, mussels, algae) and scrubbing the oysters clean.
Shell Bag Loading: As part of the oyster production, after we breed larval oysters, we set them onto bags of Pacific oyster shell, where they grow for a few months before transferred to tideflats for restoration projects. Many hands make light work, and we can definitely use hands to help us load 600-700 bags into our setting tanks.
These events take place outside, under canopies (if raining) so anyone volunteering should dress for cold, wet weather. Even if it isn’t raining you will want to wear a rain jacket, rain boots, and rain pants if you have them. You will also need to bring a pair of rubber-coated gardening gloves to protect your hands. We will have some to loan out if you don’t have your own.
When: December 4th, 2025, 10am – 2pm
Where: 7305 Beach Dr. E, Port Orchard WA 98366
