Upcoming BC Trips

Keep the fucking politics out of this so we can actually have a conversation and maybe arrive at some conclusion. Get political after that request and I'm going to call you out as the dickhead that you are.

I'm am getting mixed reports regarding the feelings that Canadians are having about US citizens. There are reports that are on BC forums which are quite friendly and reports from family members of Canadians residing down here that are not very friendly. I'm not worried about my personal safety but I would hate to have my truck and trailer messed with while I'm out on the lake or asleep at night.

So I'm wondering what others may have heard or even experienced recently.

The wife and I are heading to Victoria next week. Same concerns. I’ll let you how things go.

Good post,

Canadians are lovely folks, I love going up there. But with US plates lile WA I am a bit wary. I’ve read the same BC threads, not sure I’ll go as I’m also a green card holder. Also born in Iraq as my dad worked in oil. A 6’5” Scotsman with accent but even in other times I have had run ins at the airport re being an Arab…sorry for the lean in towards politics but being a bit foreign sucks when it shouldn’t.

So likely I’ll stay put. Annoyed as I bought a 12’ journey 2 yrs ago to explore bc lakes…

I like the idea of sticking at least a maple leaf emblem but there’s daft folks everywhere. A camp ground I was at had a great steward and was wondering if most are like that. Private places like Roberts(?) roost in Quesnel are likely ok as fewer yahoos roaming around.

Just rumors.
They are accommodating neighbors and open minded enough to understand that one person in charge for a few years won't ruin their life long relationships with their neighbors and friends.
I had no troubles between 2016 and 2020.

My wife and I went to Victoria at the beginning of December and had a great weekend away. Now this is before more recent events but post election. I could always pull my dual citizen card if needed 😅. We did spend some time eavesdropping on a couple of college age kids talking about the US while sitting at a brewery downtown. None of it was negative, just a couple guys having a discussion about some of the cultural differences down here. My wife and I tend to blend in pretty good when we travel, we were mistaken for locals at one point when we went on our honeymoon to Ireland in 2017, some Americans really make themselves well known when they're out and about in other countries....

Timely thread, Wayne, as my friend Keith and I are heading north in a month. I too have been wondering.

Hey Wayne, just FYI I've heard a few reports of targeted vehicle vandalism but always in cities (Vancouver/Victoria). If you're just passing thru on your way to the isolated northern regions I think you'd be OK.

Canadians are good people. Be low key and just go and have fun. I would be more concerned parking in WA.

Edited to add: contact your vehicle insurance to make sure you are covered, just In case...

10 years ago my friend from Oregon had his Maravia slashed at night in his motel parking lot.
I don't think current situation has anything to do with anything.

There was talk of problems years ago with vehicles with US plates around the lower Fraser and the potential of that will probably never go away, just like it won't in our own state. I'm pretty careful when and where I park while out fishing and have had three problems; one break in, one stolen outboard, and one stolen raft. I have heard some of the same rumors more recently as a result of current conditions but if I were anywhere remote and/or out of the lower population areas, I'd worry much less in BC than I would in WA. That said, a friend and I did have a discussion recently about this same topic and though I did think it was mostly tongue in cheek, we thought about looking for old BC license plates to temporarily put on our vehicles if venturing in the bush this year.

Just for something real and not based on the internet.....

Went and did this with my mom today. Lots of people on both sides of the line, being people and recognizing the peopleness of people.

The internet makes you feel isolated, scared and like people are out to get you. It's not like that in real life. Go shake a hand and make sure you tell people that "they," the ones doing this, arent doing it for us or by us.

Hope that's not too political, as I don't want to be a dickhead. But the sky only falls when we believe it and refuse to go outside.

I travel overseas 3x a month, be polite, follow the rules, spend some money, and 99.9% if people will be warm in return. Don’t let the 0.1% of village idiots deter you from a wonderful experience. If politics comes up regardless of whether you disapprove, approve or neutral of the current administration, it’s pretty easy to disarm someone face to face with “yeah, he sure says somethings that are quite stupid sometimes.”

I goto Canada weekly. Not an issue.
Most Cansdians don't have e problem with its citizens; the issues is with the Dickhead making the polices and comments e erydsy.

When the president was in place in 2016, most people just wanted to understand more. Had some great conversations of what was happening and why. No issues at all. They are as confused as we are...

As a Canadian, I can tell you my sentiments. I despise and am angered by some of the statements made by the current President, they are offensive, ignorant, and incredibly disrespectful (hope that is not too political, just trying to give you a realistic perspective from a Canadian point of view), but I recognize that those statements are not representative of the majority of Americans, especially Americans who travel to Canada with any regularity. Treat us with respect and you will be treated with respect.

Number One Son works in the hospitality industry in Vancouver (BC, that is), same sentiment, be polite and respectful (as you should be all the time), and you will get the same in return; however, if you act like what is considered the "stereotypical American tourist", loud, pushy, and obnoxious (remember, I said stereotypical, it is a caricature), then you may not be made to feel very welcome.

I think if you are going to your regular haunts that you know to be safe, you will still be safe, sketchy areas, a WA license may be targeted first (don't know - assholes and thieves are assholes and thieves and may not distinguish).

Remember, you are guests in their home, wipe your feet, say please and thank you, and all should be well.

Apologies if I have been a Dickhead.

Cheers

Good thread! The only thing I've heard is that many American products have been taken off of the shelves. Things like bourbon, Jack Daniels and other major brands. Just one more thing that will hurt our economy.

I plan on going up at some time, it's been a while since I've been up in BC. Maybe take a train up.

I'm more worried about parking up on the Sky, Skagit, Sauk, etc. I just had my passenger side mirror stolen on my Kia a few weeks ago in Redmond, they jacked my door up too. Just have to keep going and ignore the a-holes!
