Umpqua Fly Tying and Casting Festival

Great venue, but not much turnout.
Curious as to why?
It seemed the word got out thru different media(s)
Odd…

I enjoyed it and bought some materials and won a raffle item.
Had a good time.

I worked the fly casting demonstration/teaching area almost the entire day. The times I spent in the venue the crowd size did seem a bit underwhelming.

@FinLuver glad you made it out and had a good time. Did you buy from the vendor in the corner selling boxes and boxes of tying material? I picked up Whiting and Metz saddles there. Great stuff and prices.

@dirty dog , the entrance admission was a non-perishable food item... and there were dozens of tiers that were happy to chat you up, show you their favorite pattern and even give flies away.

@Rob Allen wish you could have been there too. Joe H. was one of the tiers. Maybe next year?

WRT the modest attendance.. not sure. Anyone go to the Albany or other fly fishing shows. Are they all in decline attendance wise?

Some things that may also factor in…
- Fly fishers are aging faster than the younger recruitment.
- Inflation has reduced the “extras” we used to enjoy.
- Mismanagement of our fisheries and river/forest closures.
- Expense of licenses vs the ROI.

I came home with more of Paul Wolflick’s tying materials…there were some great deals to be had!!!

Even won this in a raffle…

There's going to be a team casting competition this year. Some details for the event are here https://flyfishingveterans.org/2023-tying-and-casting-festival/ I believe there's still time to sign up if anyone wants to tie. Let me know if you do and I'll forward your info to the coordinators. I'll be working the casting demonstration/teaching area some and tying for a few hours. Hope to see you there!

Darn, just saw this. That's during my muzzleloader season and I need a deer in the freezer. I'd love to attend but I'll be in Eastern, WA.

The director for Fly Fishing Veterans, one of the sponsors for the event was just interviewed on the Wet Fly Swing podcast. He talks about the organization. You can check it out here:

I’m gettin’ kinda antsy for the weekend to be here!!
See those that attend…there. 😁

Had a great time…tyin’, teachin’, givin’ an SBS and fly away…meetin’ some great people. Best compliment I get is when people say they walked away with some great tips and techniques. That’s my why for the whole fly tyin’ game.

I hope more people will make an effort to attend to help support this great show and support the Veteran organization.
