uHaul van vs. rental car

A couple years ago in Alaska, we noticed a uHaul van that was showing up around town at the fishing hotspots, and I realized he was probably renting it for road fishing instead of a car, because they're so much cheaper. Just wondering if there might be any restrictions on the use of it during a multi-day rental. If not, it could be an alternative to Avis that's much easier on the wallet. Has anyone on this forum ever done that?

This was definitely a thing during COVID when cars were scarce. Not sure I've heard much about it lately, but then again, i'm rarely in the rental car market.

A friend of mine comes up to the PNW for a visit every summer. For the last 3 years he's rented a van. Two years ago he rented a huge Ford Transit U-haul van for about 1/3 the cost of a small sedan. That worked great for hauling a ton of camping gear.

Turo is the way to go for affordable car rental options IMO. A little more hassle perhaps but well worth the cost savings.

DIY hunting and fishing trips on the cheap - UHaul box trucks/vans make workable campers. This is a tip someone gave me as I was planning a DIY hunt in Alaska in the coming year or 2.

Polka!

(We had a polka band at our wedding reception 😁 )

Much cheaper than a rental car.
You can rent a pickup for around half the cost.

Depends on your use and need. If you have a bunch of gear you can keep it out of site out of mind. Depending on time of year, you can put a cot and sleep in there, big coolers for all the fish you're going to catch. get a hotel room every few days to wash up and do laundry.
I'd buy a Club for steering wheel too.
On a side note, when working in New Mexico, id rent a Dodge Caravan. plenty of power and when I walked out the building, I could open all the sliders and rear doors, dump all the hot air out while I'm walking to it. Then throw my laptop case in back, close all the doors and crank on the AC and roll without having to deal with all the built up hot air.
