They "swim"in the wrong direction. I used to meet clients on the dock in front of Dolphin Marina on Little Torch Key. That is where the bait tanks are and I spent more than couple hours over the years watching the shrimp in those tanks. They are in near constant motion and when fully extended they move forward nearly always. The only time they "swim" backwards is when they convulse their tail and body underneath the carapace in a flight response to a perceived threat. At that time they are more in a "ball" than fully extended. Not saying those flies will be completely ineffective but if they are aggressively stripped my guess is they are not being taken as a shrimp.but something just fleeing in front of a feeding fish.

The two foam backed shrimp are Disco Shrimp patterns (Drew Chicone). They have a rattle at the head and the sequin at the tail cause a lot of commotion at the surface. Excellent speckled trout and redfish fly for early morning and evening topwater use over deep grass. The Glass Shrimp pattern (right side) is based on a Morten Hansen pattern. It is a dense pattern that sinks fast. I use it as a dropper under a rattle Shrimp Gurgler. Very effective on trout over deep grass.

I can vouch for the fishiness of Mike's flies. He sent me a few lots to try down here in Florida and I had no problem getting fish to promptly crush them. Snook, ladyfish, etc. Bunch of great patterns in this lot.
