3 - North Fork Composites Iconoglass 8'6" 12wt fiberglass rod w/Redington Behemoth and Airflo Big Game line. Custom built for me and tuna by Terry Turner (over-size grip, extra grip, big guides) this rod is silly amounts of fun when hooked up.


I’m just north of Seattle, 5min from I-5 N/S and 405.

That's really nice of you to offer to lend gears to folks like that.

Ha! You mean the stuff currently on loan to the Port Angeles PD? I think I’ll have it in hand in time for late summer fish on the Deschutes (which fortunately that extends into November). The wheels of justice turn slowly.

When I get it back you're welcome to borrow that too. 😜

The top one is one of several variations of "poppers" I've tried with limited success. When they are absolutely fired up and in the mood that they'd eat your boot if you hung it in the water, that top one will produce. But across the board in most normal scenarios the bottom one is my go to.

Forget bluefin, I wanna tie into one of those rare makos out there. Honestly, that's a major box that I need to get checked....maybe next year....
 
Anyone have some advice on leader setups for tuna fishing?

Makos are not at all rare out there. Set up a decent chum slick and they’ll come by. Or course so will the blues, of which there are even more.

Also, have two or more rods rigged up and ready. If Nick/the deck hand can get them to convert from troll to bait stop (which doesn’t always happen) you don’t want to waste time.

Yep!
I found it really useful last year to fully rig up the 2 rods, break it down in half and rubber bands the ends together. This way they fit into the front compartment easily, don't get tangled up with other rods and be quickly deployed.
Last thing you want to do on a pitching boat is looking down to attach the rod sections and tying knots :)

Nah, as a acquaintance discovered, the last thing you want to do at sea is open the tube for your $10,000 custom-built-for-that-tuna-trip and custom-engraved Oyster Bamboo 12wt, which you’ve been excitedly talking about and showing off via zoom and discover that you only brought the butt section.

EDIT: Actually, that was funny as hell. The look on his face was priceless.
